So as many of you know I left my former employer in June for many reasons but also because the industry was unstable. Apparently they've now closed 4 offices with no notice- literally walked in and said were closing in 20 minutes- here's a box... Leaving the other 90+ offices wondering who's next. They've also laid off quite a few individuals from other departments as well across the country, again with no notice, no formal announcement- nothing!
Today I am counting my blessings- coming to work with no clue if the team would show up with your box is so not how I want to love my life...

So way back when my mom was in her twenties she worked at this place and they were having layoffs and the day they did it they had everyone put their heads down (you know like head up seven up) and if they tapped you on the shoulder they gave you a box and you were to quitely pack up your things and leave. How crazy is that! Sometimes I think companies make poor choices in how they decided how to let people go.
Last year when we had massive lay offs each department basically made a spread sheet and rated every employee in that area on various things, (personality, timelyness, works well with other, quality and production were a few) and then they took the bottome five or ten and thatwas who was let go! I think that may have been a good system but to tell th employees left that that was how it was done was a little on the not so cool side because then it left people wondering "What if i was number 6 or 11"
Wow Jenn! I'm so happy you got out when you did.
I feel terrible for all of those people. That is a horrible way to go.

How completely horrible. This reminds me of stories I heard about when the Arizona Republic and the Phoenix Gazette merged years ago. Everyone had to sit at their desks, and wait for their phones to ring. If your phone rang, you were laid off. If it didn't, you were safe. So they all just sat there all day waiting to see if the phone would ring or not.
Stories like that really bother me. There's no easy way to lay someone off, but jeez, you can certainly try to be humane about it.
Wow, that is really crazy! Good thing you trusted your instinct and left when you had the chance.
This happened to DH about 2 years ago. He was working in Parts at Bill Heard Chevrolet in Scottsdale. On a Friday morning he got a call from a vendor saying how sorry he was that they were closing. He asked his boss about it and he wouldn't tell him anything. After lunch they told everyone that they were shutting the doors that day and everyone had to stay until 5 if they wanted thier final paycheck. We got lucky and he was offered a job the next week, but it was still a shock.
There's a law that a company can't close a location with more than 50 employees (actually, I believe it's if they have more than 50 ee's in a certain mile radius) without giving them 6 weeks notice. The class action lawsuit has been approved, we're just waiting on the check worth 6 weeks of pay.
