For a wedding present, my mom is going to buy us a new vacuum (I asked for it...how lame!)...but we really don't know what kind to get! we've been using my MIL's old one for years... we have dogs, so it'd have to be good with pet hair. and i think i want a HEPA filter too, since I tend to get sick easy. the max price is probably about $150-200...
any suggestions? thanks!

It's awesome. We have a Maine C00n cat that sheds like there's no tomorrow and I have long hair that I leave all over the floors. The lift off feature is great for the stairs and vacuuming the furniture... you don't have to lug the whole vacuum around. Just push two buttons to detach the dirt bin and the hose and leave the rest of the vacuum sit.
I have asthma and pretty bad allergies and I think it's great (obviously).

I have a Bissell, which we paid about $100 for. It lasted 9 years, with a dog with long hair and crazy shedding. It just died, so we bought this one, which is the newer version.

We do not have wall to wall carpeting - just a few area rugs. If we had wall-to-wall I might be inclined to spend more, but since we have all hardwoods, I've found this to suit our needs.
Thanks everyone! We ended getting the Bissel Lift-off (the first suggestion), mainly because my mom is buying it & I feel bad asking her to spend too much.
I think in the future we might try a Dyson, if I can find a good deal, but for now the Bissel will be just fine
