My husband has a week off work and I just finished school (yay!) so we have some time on our hands. We decided today we want to go somewhere. We saw some smoking deals to London and Paris ($450 pp) and ended up at Flight Centre, determined to take advantage of this deal. Until, that is, we realized we'd need a passport for our son, which we don't have, and leaving him behind is not an option. We were thisclose to signing on the dotted line when the sales lady asked us if he had a passport... sigh. For some reason I thought young kids could travel with their mothers with just a birth certificate.
So that limits us to Canada, but Canada is so much more expensive! We looked at Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, but they were all $800+ pp for just the flight, which would be over $3000 after taxes and such for just airfare, plus everything else, and we don't have that kind of money right now to spend on a spur-of-the-moment trip.
We're dying to go somewhere but feel we have exhausted everything around us... we're in BC and have recently done Vancouver (ad nauseum), Victoria, Kelowna, Banff, Jasper, Calgary, Edmonton. We were tossing around the idea of other places on the island but it seems so far to drive with a two year old (four hours to Vancouver, couple hours on ferry, couple hours up the island).
Are there any brilliant places we're not thinking of? All we can think of is Whistler and neither of us really want to do that. We're more than willing to fly but it has to be cheap from Vancouver.
Re: vacation spots
As a child under 16, he may still be able to go to the US without a passport. Double check with the travel agent though.

How about a cruise to Alaska? A round-trip cruise would save you from having to get flight tickets, but a one-way cruise lets you see more. I've heard that one-way cruises are also a little cheaper to make up for the additional expense of the flight (that's what our travel agent told us when w went last year).

I am pretty sure you will need a passport for him regardless of where you go (including the US) or how you get there. We did when we went into the US in February and in April.
BUT you can get one expediated for him if you need to. When were you thinking of leaving? Check the passport Canada office but I think you can get one in like 48 hours if you pay for it.
Even though you would have to put out extra money for his passport, you will still be saving b/c you'll be able to take advantage of the awesome european deals right now.
I personally wouldn't take a chance on trying to go to the US without a passport for him. Some friends of ours did this April and got into the US ok but believe it or not, had trouble getting the kids back across the border into Canada. It was quite an ordeal for them.
that's neat about the 24 hour passport!
Unfortunately his week off started Saturday, so we would have had to leave that day. If we had ordered a passport Monday and received it Tuesday that wouldn't have left enough time for a trip. We're just hanging out at home, doing touristy things we never make time for
