Teachers and a basement question
Please pardon my total ignorance!
First, do houses in VA have basements? We don't!
It is possible we might move to VA,everything is unclear right now,
but I wanted to know what you thought of VA's public schools? I know it
depends on the area, but what about schools in the northern part-
Alexandria, places like that?
Thanks!
Are masters degrees looked fondly upon for teachers?
What is the state testing like with Elementary schools?
Anything I should know? Are there field trips?
I am from Texas.
Re: Teachers and a basement question
I'm not from the Northern area of Va. I'm in the central part in a great school district. Masters don't really make or break you in my county.
State testing begins at 3rd grade (but of course there are standards that need to be taught k-2). They are called Standards of Learning.
I'm sure there are field trips but nothing the state mandates.
We have two tests you will probably need to take Virginia Reading Assessment, Virginia Communications and Literacy Assessment in addition to Praxis 1 and 2.
The NoVa (northern Va area which also has it's own board you may get better answers there) area is growing very quickly and from what I understand from friends and people who graduated close to me did not have a hard time finding a job because they were opening many schools in several districts every year. I'm not sure if that has slowed down at all over the past year or so though.

Great Schools just voted Virginia Beach City Public Schools the 5th best large school district in the nation... I'd say it's pretty good.
That aside, I teach for VBCPS and I do think it is a good school district. I have also taught in Maryland and I think VBCPS offers more to the students.
I assume you're moving Northern, VA because of your question regarding Alexandria schools, but just to clarify about basements. In Virginia Beach there are no basements. It's below sea level there, so you can't have them.
I grew up not knowing what a basement was until I went away to college and found out that my friends had them in their homes. I thought it was the coolest thing!!
