Hi girls,
I had a great phone interview Thursday and the guy actually called me back Saturday afternoon to offer assistance getting my husband a job too. So, it looks like it's going really well. The job would be at the University of Chicago.
I would be moving from San Antonio so the cost of living difference is freaking me out at the moment (since I have not actually been offered anything yet!) Is there a chance of finding a rental house with a small backyard anywhere near U of C? I'm not familiar with the neighborhoods at all, and we have 2 dogs that would make it difficult to go back to apartment living. Any feedback related to the area would be greatly appreciated!
Re: could be relocating from San Antonio
I'm not really familiar with that area, we just moved here ourselves. But I will tell you that we've found Chicago to be very dog friendly so even if you do have to go to an apartment you hopefully shouldn't have any trouble. I know it's not the same to have to walk the dogs, but it's definitely do-able!

Oh I LOVE the Hyde Park area!
Hyde Park (where UofC is located) has a somewhat bad reputation, and it isn't all that ill deserved. However, over the last few years the University has really bought up a lot of the property down there (I'm in the Loop, so a few miles north of there, but my H works in Hyde Park and is a student down there too) and right around the school, extending out a fair distance, is wonderful & safe (considering that this is a HUGE city, so it's all relative).
There are a lot of great rentals in HP, and like PP said, Chicago is a very pet friendly City. While I'm not sure about renting a stand alone house (in terms of cost--it's so far out of my price range I have never looked in to it), there are a lot of apartment/condo buildings that are for rent and it is very common for them to have little garden areas for their tenants, so that would be nice. HP is also very close to the lake and parks so that makes it easier for pets too.
There's also the option of living not right in HP, and looking for something cheaper in the burbs, but I'm not sure if you're considering that or not. You also can live downtown and take the Metra down to HP.
That said, I love love love the HP area, and I think you'll be able to find something you like for a pretty affordable price close to the University. The COL is a bit (not much, but a bit) lower around that area (compared to the Loop/northern neighborhoods).
Keep us posted!
