Rain Barrel

I have mosquitoes in my rain barrel even though I covered the top with window screen. I had to basically cut a hole in the top of my barrel and the netting in going over the whole top with a bungee holding it around the edge. Any ideas of how I can better prevent these little pests? It's possible that they got in when the barrel was over flowed but I tried hard to be diligent about draining it enough so it didn't sit on the top.

On a lighter note the bats and frogs have moved in due to the mosquitoes ha ha. It's crazy to see the bats fly around at night.

Re: Rain Barrel

  • Try adding a few spoonfuls of cooking oil to the barrel.  Supposedly the oil breaks the surface tension so the mosquitoes can't land or lay eggs.
