Hibiscus question

Hi ladies, I've never posted on this board before but now that we have a house H and I are getting started on our yard.

Anyhow I bought a hibiscus over the weekend for my plant stand on the patio; the lady at the nursery told me that I could keep it in the pot if I didn't want to put it in the ground. It had 3 large blossoms on it when I brought it home then it closed up at night. It hasn't reopened since and those 3 large blossoms fell off. I kept movng it to sunny spots in the back yard & tried one last attempt by bringing it in the house since it got cool at night these last couple days but so far it's still closed. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? I'm keeping the soil moist like they told me to and was going to buy the fertilizer today. Thanks!

Re: Hibiscus question

  • Um, maybe stop moving it around everywhere and let it get used to its new surroundings?

  • Hibiscus flowers last one day--you're not doing anything wrong.  You have to wait for it to develop new buds

Thank you. :) There actually are a ton of new buds forming too. I am going to keep it in the house too, since I live in MI and it's bound to get cold in the next few months. I guess I wasn't really thinking when I bought it, but it was so pretty.

  • I'm in Southern Ontario and we keep our hibiscus out on the deck through the late spring and into early fall.  When it first goes out it takes a bit to adjust and can get sun burned if it's in full sun.

After a few years in the same pot ours got almost completely pot bound.  I just transferred it to a new pot and it's doing very well.  We've had 1 bloom so far and I think I see another bud coming up.
