Bee problem-Help!

When we bought our house, the previous owners put "Lots of bees' on the purchase & sales as a problem. I thought they meant on the property. Well I'm quickly learning they meant inside the house. Our attic is finished & I've been noticing lots of bees in one of the upstairs bedrooms. They get in but can't get out so I'm finding dozens of them dead in front of the window. We're in the process of cleaning up there & getting ready for a baby & I'm afraid that in the spring there will be more bees. And that's where the baby's room will be. I walked around the house & checked it all out & I don't see any hive outside but I did see bees flying in & out of a certain spot on the roof.
So my questions:

Has anyone had experience with bee hives in their homes-in walls, the roof, etc?

If so, what did you do?

If we just seal up the spot in the roof will the bees eventually die or will they lay dormant until next spring & reappear with a vengeance?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I am petrified of bees! Thanks

  • We had this problem in our attic and bedroom last year.  It was awful! Sealing up the entrance won't get rid of them unfortunately- trust me lol.  Ours were wasps and there were probably hundreds of them.  I remember turning on the closet light (we have a walk in) and tons of bees just lifted off the floor and dressers up to the light.  I was horrified!

I might get flamed for this, but we called an exterminator.  He sealed up interior spots like around light switch plates, electrical outlets and window frames and sprayed from outside.  Haven't had any problems since then.

    Good luck!

My neighbor had honest-to-goodness honeybees.  He called an exterminator, who successfully killed all the bees.  Unfortunately, a few months later, his ceilings and walls began dripping with honey.  I came home one day to a beekeeper lining the sidewalk outside our houses with many 5-gallon buckets of comb and honey pulled out of my neighbors walls.  He said that when the bees are alive, they use their wings to cool the hive and keep the honey in the hive.  Once my neighbor killed all the bees and summer came, the honey just melted all over the insides of his walls.  I don't think the fix was cheap.  Anyway, if you have honeybees, don't just hire some idiot exterminator who doesn't know anything about bees.  Call someone who knows about bee removal, hopefully one who can relocate the hive for you, since our bees are in a lot of trouble.  If they're wasps, I don't have any advice.

  • I am not trying to be condescending in any way, but I'm really curious.  This disclosure was on the sale papers and you bought the house.  Did you have an inspection done?

I hope they knocked off a good bit of the price for the remediation.  I'd get that taken care of immediately.

    Such a tragedy.

Yes.  I believe my neighbor understands his mistake now.  I launched into a lecture when I met him (they rented the house out for two years before they moved in; that's when the bee problem happened), and he was quite sheepish about it already.
