Who besides me & Cindy (festivegal) are part of a Blended (Step) Family?
Re: Blanded familes
DH has a 9 year old daughter from his previous marriage. She is a sweet girl & generally speaking we don't have any problems with her. However, the relationship that we have with BM (birth mom) is strained. She hasn't made the best life choices and it's hard to watch those choices unfold in SD life.
To give a bit of back ground, she has been married/divorced 3 times but only claims 2 of the marriages b/c there wasn't a child resulting from the 2nd and it lasted only a year. She is currently engaged for the 5th time and was living in FI's house while he lived in her smaller rental house. We just found out from her yesterday that she moved back to her rental house (in a terrible neighborhood) after living in FI's house for only 1.5 months. It appears that she & FI have broken up. This wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't dragging SD around in all of this. Out of the 3 vacation weeks that we have had SD she has come "home" to a different house twice. We all know how stressful it is to move. Can you imagine how bad it must be to move twice in lass than 2 months?
Sorry to vent this all to you guys but I'm so frustrated. It wouldn't be so bad if EX would put her kids first but she makes terrible financial & life decisions. An example of her bad finacial decisions is the swimming pool that she had installed @ her RENTAL HOUSE! The pool companies around here won't put in a pool unless you OWN the house so undoubtly she lied to them. Why would you spend thousands of $$$ on a rental house in one of the worst neighborhoods in town and not put it towards getting into a house in a safer area? I try to walk a mile in her shoes & sympathize with her but her decisions are just so bad it's hard to relate.
UGH! Thanks for "listening". If you can offer any advice or perspective please feel free. TIA
I'm a stepmom too! Funny how we stepmoms are creating a more stable environment for the kids, than their BMs provide. I have 2 stepkids, the boy(Reid) is 14, and the girl (Randi) is 11. I'm fortunate they have known me since they were little (think 1-4 yrs old) so they didn't have any bad feelings when I came into the picture. They love me and esp my cooking (since their mom does NOT cook much for them and what she does cook is not nearly as tasty :-) ).
We have a 50/50 custody agreement- they come to our house Wed/Thurs and every other weekend. This was so their mom could work the typical nurse shifts on the days we have the kids, and so be available to care for them when she did have them.
Their mom is now going thru school to become a nurse anesthetist, which means she's gone from 5am-5pm basically 5x/wk, with a lot of variances in the schedule which affect the kids. The kids (and DH and I) get yanked around when her schedule changes, but we always come out looking better to the kids because we always have them longer and more often due to the schedule yanking. Reid has already mentioned to Alex (DH) that he's coming to the age where he thinks he should be able to choose if he wants to live with one parent full time (aka us). Until Randi is older and able to be on her own at her mom's, DH won't let that happen.
Go us wonderful stepmoms!

We are a blended family; my DH is step-dad to my son and we are lucky because my son's real father has never been in the picture, so I have no idea what it is like to deal with those situations... But if I was in the situation as the step-mom, I may talk to my DH and consider fighting for custody?? It is so hard for a father to gain custody unless a mother is proven unfit... This has to be hard and I'm sorry you and your family are going through it.

I most definitely want what's best for Amanda. I don't agree with her mom's tactics of taking her out of school to go on vacations, letting her stay home every time they have a half day or when we get snow, or taking her out to eat all the time knowing the doctor wants her to lose weight and watch for diabetes. But, there's nothing I can say.
I do get along with Amanda's mom but since we moved into our house we're closer to them and she has been popping over without calling. Amanda has been with her every time except for this past Saturday when she came over to bring Amanda her phone (she was already w/ us and we just finished dinner). Mike said she tried to walk right in without knocking!!! The door was locked...
