Banking/coupon question

I know there's a MM board, but...

Do any of you guys have an online savings account that you're happy with? I've been with EmigrantDirect for years, but lately I am becoming disillusioned. They gave me a real run-around about changing my name and address, for starters. I can never get a clear connection when I call customer service; it always sounds like the rep is on a cell phone without a good signal, and then they get exasperated with me. The thing that has me looking for a new savings account, though, is that they flat-out refuse to add Matt as a joint depositor. They said something (they won't tell me what) in his Chex System report led to the decision, and they won't discuss it further.

Now, my HH does not have the best credit history, and we are the first people to admit that. But this is a SAVINGS account. How does he constitute a risk? It's not like there are even checks for him to bounce! I'm thinking about ING Direct, but I'm not sure if there are other options that I need to be considering. I don't want to put all of our savings into our primary bank because it makes me nervous in case our account gets compromised (Matt's boss just lost $1400 because somebody got into his account).

I'm trying to get back on the coupon wagon, too. I've been trying CouponMom.com for a few weeks, but it's just not working out that well for me. The sales aren't always actually there when I get to the store, and the coupons aren't always where they say they are. I'm thinking of scrapping it and going back to my clip-n-file "system." I dunno. Anybody have something that works well for them?

Re: Banking/coupon question

  • Our savings account is through our bank so I'm no help there, sorry. As far as the coupon thing, I've never had luck with online coupons so I just clip them out of the paper every Sunday.

  • Did either of you go to a state school for college?  If so, you could join PSECU (Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union).  I am sure there are other ways to qualify as a member but I don't know them off hand.  It's all online and very secure in my opinion.  I never have problems with their customer service either.

DH doesn't have the best credit but had no problems opening an account with them.  Feel free to contact me if you have questions about or want more info on PSECU.

How did his boss lose $1400, don't most banks protect against that kind of thing?  Anyone I know that has had a bank account compromised has gotten the money back from the bank.

I've got nothing for your coupon dilemma.

  • i second checking out PSECU - i have accounts with them and so does Jake.  we both graduated from a state school, but my mom originally set up my account because she was teaching at HACC.  you did say you teach at a local college, right?  I bet you qualify, then. You can do everything (including deposits) online or use the PSECU associated ATM's..and there a couple branches in the Harrisburg area and one in Indiana, PA.  If I still lived in PA I would bank with them exclusively.  They also have great rates on personal loans, student loans, and mortgages, etc.

In terms of coupons, I clip ones I get in the paper, and I use a website called Shortcuts.com - you can link the coupons right to your grocery store "card" (including Giant Eagle and Shop-n-Save)...super easy adn they also have print coupons available.  I also go to the manufacturer's websites (Pillsbury, kraft, betty crocker, etc.) and they e-mail you printable coupons to use.  I also get coupons is called coupons.com...you have to download their print "driver", but it's easy to use and there are usually lots of coupons on there.

  • I have had ING for 2.5 year. I am really happy with it. I never put HH on my account though, so I don't know how difficult that is, but it was super easy to change my name, and I've always actually had positive experiences with their customer service.

  • I have Emigrant too and I'm not all that pleased with it anymore.  We opened up a Capitol One joint savings to save for a house.  Dan did all the research to pick it out, but he said it was by far the best.

  • Thanks for the tips, girls! I'm checking out PSECU, but I haven't yet found a way that we're eligible... I work at a private college, and Matt and I both went to private universities out-of-state. I was hoping that Matt's employer would be listed, but it's not looking that way. Maybe I'll give them a call to see if I'm missing something. I'll probably also check out ING or Capitol One.

I'll check out the coupon things, too... I clip them from the Sunday paper, but using them to the fullest advantage has always been a challenge for me. I think I'm going to clip the ones I would use and file them in a little organizer like I used to, but maybe still try to use CouponMom to match them to sales when possible. Or something. I like the idea of having them pre-loaded on the store cards, too. :)
