Looking for neighborhood recs please...
Hi ladies. I've been lurking recently since there was a chance DH would get a job in LA and now I'm coming out to ask for suggestions. He's accepted a job in Van Nuys but I have no idea where we should start to look for places to live! His company recommended Sherman Oaks and Studio City. Thoughts? What can we expect to pay per month? Anything we should avoid?? I'll add that its just us - no kids, no pets (yet), and two cars. Thanks for any help!

You could also live over the hill in WeHo and take one of the canyons to work. Welcome to LA!
Ideally you should try to live as close as possible to your work location (unless you like traffic?) but Van Nuys is pretty rough. There are some live-able pockets surrounding the area, you'll just have to drive around to find the non-ghetto areas.
Are you looking at buying or renting? And where will you work (if you are?) Those are important factors. Assuming you're talking about renting, you're looking at ~1500 on the low end for a 2bd+ apartment in a decent neighborhood, up to as high as you want to go.
Studio City, Valley Village, Sherman Oaks, Toluca Lake are all good areas. They are all south valley/at the hills going to Hollywood. You'll pay more there, and still have somewhat of a drive to Van Nuys. Burbank (where I live) is a few miles to the east also and another one to consider, not quite as pricey as the aforementioned but still safe and quiet (expect to pay between 1500?2000 for a good condo, 2000+ for a house). North Hollywood is the closest I'd live to Van Nuys, and has a few OK streets (one to consider if you're on a budget).
Browse craigslist and see what people are charging in those areas. But neighborhoods are weird here, you could find a street with million dollar houses and across the block be in the ghetto... you really need to see the area person before deciding.

Hi, We lived in Studio City when we were first married and LOVED it! There is a lot going on and you can easily take the canyon roads thru the mtn to drop into Beverly Hills, etc vs the 405. Sherman Oaks is the next town over and great too. We owned a condo at the time, we paid 525K but this was when things were crazy. You may find cheaper rent in Valley Village vs Studio City. I would definitely rent first to get a feel for LA and see if you like teh town you pick, before you buy since the market is so sour.

I would definitely try to live as close to work as possible since LA traffic is a million times worse than you expect. When we moved all we knew was that DH would be working at UCLA so we looked in Westwood (great neighborhood btw). We have a 550sq ft studio loft (bedroom upstairs, living/kitchen/bathroom downstairs) for $1475/mo. We love living on the west side (lots to do, cooler than in the valley, close to the beach.....), DH can walk to work & when I was job searching I limited myself to 10miles.
