Saving Our Children from Predators

I have never sent a letter like this before but after becoming aware of this issue I feel compelled to tell everyone that I know personally about it. There is a senate bill called the Child Protection Act 1738 which will provide federal funding to:

  • authorize over $320 million over the next five years in desperately needed funding for law enforcement to investigate child exploitation.
  • Mandate that child rescue be a top priority for law enforcement receiving federal funding.
  • Allocate funds for high-tech computer software that can track down Internet predators.

As a teacher of disabled children I cannot tell you the number of times that I've been made aware that a student that I know has been sexually abused. I know personally of situations in which students become angrya nd act out because of the abuse that they've suffered at the hands of these sick perpetrators. It manifests itself in many ways after the abuse has stopped, many of whom suffer well beyond the childhood years. I see this personally in my work with teens. I'd like my job to become obsolete, and only to work with those who are disabled in other ways not related to abuse.

Unfortunately the internet is a wonderful and awful tool. There are even cases of infants less than a month old suffering abuse live on the internet. Surely this has to stop.

I learned of this issue and bill on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Like her or not, she brings issues to the forefront. The entire show was dedicated to people on the front lines who try to bring pedofiles to justice, however they cannot always help because of a lack of funding.

Please contact your senator by clicking on the link below and sedning them an email. It will only take a minute or two, and it may indirectly save some of these children.
