Need Help w/ Out-of-Town Guests

My brother and his girlfriend are flying into Raleigh from Vegas on Friday.  All of us are then heading down to the beach on Sunday to meet up with the rest of the family.  They came out a few days early to hang out with us, see our house, and see Raleigh.  Friday night we are doing dinner and then neighborhood Happy Hour.  But we can't figure out what to do with them on Saturday.  Any ideas?

They are pretty big drinkers, but we are trying to avoid the bar scene Saturday night since we'll be doing enough drinking at the beach and DH and I don't want to be hungover for our drive to the beach.

Also, she's vegetarian, which isn't a huge deal.  But it just makes some Raleigh classics like bbq not quite as exciting!

  • Carolina Brewery in Holly Springs does a free tour on Saturdays at 1.  You get free beer (usually at least 2 full glasses) and it's informational.  We always take our out of town guests there.

This sounds very promising!  Never knew of this!  How long does it usually take for the tour?  I'm wondering if we should plan another "activity" before dinner.

  • There's a winery in Morrisville, I think its Chatham Hill? It's $5 for a tasting, tour and a free wine glass.

You could eat at Sweet Tomato's, not sure if that is a chain near them but its yummy!

  • Farmer's Market? I took a friend there over the weekend and she was quite impressed. She had never seen a Farmer's Market that big, but it depends on what you're use too.
  • I always find the flea market to be fun to wander around, but I guess it depends on how hot it is. You could do Brewery tours/tasting to get the desire to drink out of the way early in the day, plus I don't think you'd get plastered to the point of hurting later. I've been kind of curious about the Segway tours they give downtown, that could be something fun/different to do? Is there a Durham Bulls game you could go to?

They are away this weekend.  My big idea was Mellow Mushroom and then Durham Bulls.  But that isn't going to work out!  And the Mudcats are away too!

It is not so much a tour as it is standing around in a warehouse listening to a 20 minute talk on how they make beer. It is free and fun but be warned they have no A/C so it gets quite hot in there! The whole thing is about 1 1/2 hours I would say. It should allow time for another activity before dinner.

  • I just wanted to chime in real quick! There's a great restaurant in Raleigh that is very vegetarian friendly (as well as predominantly local food).  It's called The Market...http://www.eatatmarket.com/index.cfm .  also, we always take people to Duke Gardens on a cool morning before it gets crazy hot!

Another restaurant option is Irregarless Cafe in downtown Raleigh.  It's been around forever has an organic/vegetarian themed menu and the food is great! (there are also plenty of meat options) They also have live music on the weekend.
