Re: so.....the duggars are nuts.

  • "People think we are overpopulating the world," says Jim Bob. Um... yes, yes I do.
  • They should quit. Take care of the sick baby that they have. Don't they have enough children to take care of. How can these parents really parent all these children.

that's what gets me, the older girls help take care of the younger kids...what happens when they leave??

The older ones don't really get to be kids--it would be interesting to follow these "kids" years later and see what kind of issues they develop.

  • I had a friend growing up who was one of the elder of 12 kids. She resented it that she had to take care of and watch all the other kids. She always swore that she would never have that many children and be there for the ones she did have.
  • I think the Duggars have good hearts but I share the same concerns regarding the "children-raising-children". Additionally, if you have a 7,000 square foot house and a ton of children I agree folks should share the chores, but to me it honestly seems as if the kids do everything.

It makes me happy when the kids get to leave Arkansas and the country for the matter to see different ways of life.

Finally, I know I ma wrong for this but I am waiting for th tell-all book. With 19+ kids, someone is going to stray and give us all the dirty secrets. Remember how one of the boys had to get his head shaved because of inappripriate behavoir with a girl from another family?

ETA: Aren't they pretty much exempt from paying many taxes because their house is considered a place or worship?

Wait, what??? Also, I think they are exempt from most taxes because of the amount of dependent children they can claim. Not including Josh since he moved out, that's 18 kids x $3750 = $67,500.

If one of the parents is a member of the clergy they may be entitled to a clergy exemption.  I think that's only the case if they have a pulpit.  I don't know if that's the case since I don't watch the show.

  • i know i will totally get flamed, but i love the duggars. i have been watching them since their tv special and watch them every week on tlc!
  • Some things are tax-exempt if you are an ordained clergy member, but you still pay income tax, and it is at a self-employed rate. I think it basically balances out.

I have mixed feelings about the Duggars though. I think it's ridiculous to have the kids do all the work and to take care of each other but I also can see how they have sort of broken free from the typical American dream to do what is most important to them. I would never, ever, ever want that many kids but I'm cool with them having the balls to do what they think is best for their family.

i agreed with this...until the 19th baby was born less than 2lbs.  and spent 6 months in the hospital. and now they're saying they'd want a 20th.  at what cost?! what happens if the mom dies?? it just gets to the point of seeming very selfish....having kids for having kids' sake...not taking their actual lives into account.

The kids have to do everything since all mom and dad do is make babies.

  • I didn't really read it as if they WANT to have more kids but that they don't plan to prevent having anymore.  God's Will and all....

This article seems a little more objective http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/38526037/ns/today-parenting/

p.s. LOL @ "festooned with a huge pink bow.."

  • While I might not agree with it, as long as they can afford it, I wouldn't stop them. If they were on welfare or being supported by the government, it would be a different story. From what I understand, Jim Bob makes a pretty good living, and they don't live the "high life."

They're exempt from property tax on their massive home because they declared themselves a church. That's basically welfare, IMO. I don't get an exemption from my property taxes - do you?

  • As an aside, I think these people are incredibly selfish. Basically, "we don't care how much it endangers the health of our children, either physically or mentally, we just want to have as many as we can! God wants us to!"

They don't seem to care that their children basically get no childhoods because they're forced to care for younger siblings (who essentially become their OWN children because they are their primary caregivers and have almost all the responsibility for them) at a young age. For God's sake, they have to SIGN UP on a signup sheet to have time alone with their mom or dad! I think that's horrible.

Ditto. Having sick kids does not fall under what is best for their family.

  • For those who have watched from the beginning ( I mean 14 kids and pregnant again ) does anyone believe the trauma Michelle suffered from her miscarriage has not properly been addressed?

Anyone else creeped out by how much Anna looks like a Duggar?

How do they pay their medical bills?

JUST to play Devil's Advocate - they're also paying income tax (at the self-employed rate) that goes towards schools that they're not using because they homeschool.

BTW, I looked up Arkansas' property tax laws and I think them being exempt from property tax is a myth. Yes, churches are exempt but it says:

"Exemption depends upon the actual primary use to which the property is being put. In the case of a public property exemption, the property must also be owned by a governmental body."

The primary use of their home is....a home. I know of a lot of other people who use their homes for church and they aren't exempt from property taxes and I doubt that the Duggars are either.

It seems to me that someone actually looked up the property tax records and saw that their tax was $0.00. I could be wrong about that, though.

Regardless, I think they're terribly selfish people and not very good parents.

  • I really like the Duggars. I think it's impressive what they do. Sure its sketch that older siblings take care of younger ones but they seem to be much more responsible and mature than others their age. I also their Faith is respectable at the very least. I mean who has the courage to say "we are going to have as many children as God allows and we are going to have faith that He will provide for our family."

Also, did you know that their family is completley debt free? And they were that way before, so don't say it's because of the show. I really admire that, how many families of 4 do you know that are debt free?

  • They're welcome to have as many children as they like as long as they're not using my tax dollars to do it (anymore than anyone else who uses roads and likes the military and NASA does).

BUT I cannot respect a mother who keeps putting her health at risk with continued pregnancies when she already has so many children who depend on her.  It makes me worry that some day they could end up relying on our tax dollars for assistance.

I agree with this. I think its super-fine-dandy if they want their "quiverfull" Ick! of children, but at some point, as rational human beings, you begin to assess a cost-benefit analysis. And with all those mouths to feed/clothe/shelter, well, it really does become too damn much.
