I just moved from Charleston, SC where I had a fantastic job as a hairstylist. I am finding it to be so hard with the economy to find a decent job anywhere.....luckily my fiance has a great job, but I have no friends, no family and no job.....no fun ;( any advice ???
Re: Jobs??!!
Aww.. Hang in there, hun. It's tough to move to a new city and not know anyone. When I was job hunting a few years ago, I used sites like monster and careerbuilder. I don't know where you've been looking but a lot of the hair salons in Miami just rent out space to their stylists and have them bring in their own clients, so I would try calling salons and seeing if any of them have space available.
Why don't you try a site like meetup.com - you can find people who share your interests in your area and who get together. We have gtgs every now and then too, though we haven't had one in a while.
aw, welcome to Miami. I moved here 2 years ago- I know the feeling.
no help on jobs, but I can help on fun! come to our book club- we're reading This Is Where I Leave You this month- meeting is in a couple weeks. you can email me (knot.angie at gmail) and I'll give you all the details. I've met some great people here (Mrs.Exhibitv- holler! we hang out all the time!).... it's tough, but you gotta go out and make it happen the best you can.
let us know how things go!
Welcome to Miami! Good luck on the job search.. like Eli said, I would start by stalking those websites for jobs. I have also heard of people using linked in and craigslist (though I would be more weary of craigslist, but I know people who have gotten legitimate jobs from there).
As far as fun, I agree with Angela.. join our book club! It's fun and you'll have some friends in S. Florida My biggest piece of advice is to try and be a "yes man" and say yes to any and all invitations. You'd be amazed of the people you meet once you start saying yes to things you may have not said yes to in the past. I've heard meetup.com can also be an interesting way of meeting people. Good luck with your job search and getting acclimated to South Florida.
Welcome to our wonderful city. We have many great people here so I am sure you will make friends in no time. Like the girls said I hear meetup.com is a great way to get to know new people. The girls on this board are also great. We have GTG's every once in a while so you might want to come to the next one (whenever that may be). Other than that I am sure you will make some friends as soon as you find a job.
As far as the job goes I would suggest going to Careerbuilder, Monster, and signing up with temp agencies. You might also want to pop your head in hair salons in your area to see if they have any job openings.
Good luck and I hope to see you around the board
Welcome to S FL! There are so many people and things to do that you'll make friends in no time. Definitely try to come to the next GTG (when it's planned). Join our book club too! It's really a lot of fun and I've met a great group of ladies through the monthly meetings.
As far as job...just stalk some of the websites PP's have mentioned. Also try the various hair salons around your area. You never know where they might be hiring even if they don't have it posted online.
Good luck with everything and hope to see you around!
Hello,
I know of a salon that just opened, maybe you should call. Its on Bird Road Shampoo.
