Something is still eating my tomatoes...

So, I tried the cayenne pepper/garlic and water mixture and sprayed it all over my plants and green tomatoes. Learned my lesson about breathing in too fiercely after spraying! Anyways, I think the mixture attracted more of whatever it is because now it's going after my cherry tomatoes too:(

I'm guessing ground squirrel - getting through my fencing, bird netting and now cayenne pepper forcefield. I'm at a loss of what to do. Fingers crossed that it gets full at some point and I get at least 1 tomato...

Anyone else have other suggestions or thoughts on what it might be?

Re: Something is still eating my tomatoes...

  • Is it just the fruit or is your plant also being eaten? Have you checked the plant for hornworms?

  • It's just the fruit. And whatever it is is eating entire huge tomatoes. Can a hornworm consume an entire tomato? I've never seen a hornworm before, but I don't see any weird bugs, or worms or anything on the plants or in the dirt.
  • If the tomatoes are still green, you can pick them now and let them ripen on your kitchen counter.  Squirrels usually leave evidence they've been snacking on your tomatoes.  I've never seen a hornworm so I can't help you there.

  • I think Liquid Fence is supposed to be safe for veggies.  Like the pepper, don't breathe it in though.

  • I've had hornworms this year and you can spot their droppings. The worms left what looks like rabbit pellets on the leaves and they mostly ate the leave.

You may have a possum. Last year I had a possum that ate every one of my heirloom tomatoes before I could pick them. I haven't seen it around yet this year so hopefully it moved on or died.
