Dominican college ?

Hi ladies. I didn't have any luck on my normal NJ board,so figured i would ask here. Does anyone know anything about Dominican College in Orangeburg, NY regarding their OT or PT programs?

Does anyone know if it is a good school and if it is hard to get into for those programs? I like how they cater to weekends and working adults.MH is looking into it but I honestly had never heard of this college before so ANY info is helpful and appreciated. Thanks in advance!

PS. Do you think this ? is better on the upstate NY board? I posted on NYC not knowing this option existed and it was suggested I try here or the Upstate Board. Thanks again!

Re: Dominican college ?

  • I don't know anything about Dominican, but this is the right board.  The college is in the Hudson Valley.  Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

  • Dominican is an excellent school.  I didn't go there, but I know quite a few people who have.  It caters to working adults and have classes to fit those schedules.  It's located right off Orangeburg Road/Veterans Highway and 303.  My ONLY complaint about the school is that the buildings seem a little far apart for my taste.  I went to the neighbor school St. Thomas Aquinas and I am used to their campus.

I think Dominican would be a great choice.

  • Thanks for the info! Glad I found the right board also.

TeeNTim do you know if it was hard to get into? when i look it up it is listed actually as a Less competitive school so I am not sure.

What programs did your friends do?Is it a safe neighborhood?

MH had given up on either going for OT or PT because it is so hard when you are older and need to work. Plus most of the PT schools around us want like a 3.7 GPA. Unfortunately he is better skilled at learning by doing- he took exercise science classes and also passed Personal Trainer exam but he could never get a 3.7 GPA when you put in other subjects like Eng Lit etc. He is also considering the OT program because it may seem more do-able but you are right, it does cater nicely to adults.

We live about 60 miles away but he is going to Ramapo for his undergrad now. The commute would be about 1hr and 10 min which is not bad considering it is so accommodating to adults.

Thanks again. Like I said any info is better than none. Seraching the internet is not always reliable. It rated safety as a D- on one of those college websites!

  • Honestly, the only "incidents" I've heard about the campus happened at the dorms.  I do know the buildings are spaced a little far from the parking lots, but there are lights.  It's in a residential neighborhood, next to a convent. The police station is right up the hill as is the local high school. I don't think it's a dangerous place at all.  St. Thomas had issues last year too but again those were incidents at the dorms.

The people I know that went there went for Special Ed teaching certification.  I don't really know how hard it is to get into. I got into St. Thomas 4 1/2 years ago with a 2.7 GPA (I received an Associates from SUNY Cobleskill).

My best advice is to go and visit and talk with the staff.  I think that would be the best way for you guys to decided if that's the school that he wants to give a try.

  • I actually graduated from the OT program 3 years ago and now teach there. If you want to give me your email address I can give you tons of info :)
  • Mellie- You've got mail!

    Thanks!

  • This is the right board...its about 3 miles from my house.

My SIL went there on a softbal scholarship and got a teaching degree from them....shes a nurse now but went back to school later for that.

From what I understand its a good school I dont know about those programs though. Its not like a lincoln tech type of school or phoenix-online school.

Its also down the street from St. Thomas of Aquinas School aka STAC

  • Up until a few months ago when I went freelance, I was on staff at the newspaper that covers Rockland County, including Dominican College. It's a nice school, very typical campus with a grassy quad, academic buildings, dorms, etc. The person who described it near the local high school, police station, etc. hit the nail on the head. It's very safe in that you wouldn't have to worry about getting mugged walking around campus, in the parking lot at night, etc. Obviously there's probably theft of things like laptops left unattended in the library and student union, and that's just common sense.

However, there was a pretty bad thing that happened there a few years ago that probably accounts for the low safety rating. It's tragic, but could have happened in any college dorm anywhere. During the end of the spring semester, a freshman girl got really drunk at a party and came home to her dorm room. She ended up getting raped by more than one guy. The guys acted shady, including writing, "I want to have sex" on a piece of paper and getting her to "sign" it (chicken scratch). They then held this piece of paper up to a security camera located in the hall outside her room while laughing and generally acting like assholes. The security video shows them going into her room and waving the paper around, but not actually her signing it or any acts of sex or violence.

The girl committed suicide shortly thereafter, and her parents are suing Dominican for not properly investigating the incident. You can read more about it here:

    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/875389/dominican_college_fails_to_investigate.html?cat=9

It's ugly, awful, tragic and obviously not good all around. However, the academic programs are above average.  It's a small Catholic college that draws students from nearby towns as well as around the country. It's a 20 minute drive to the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan. The campus is probably otherwise safe; common sense should always prevail no matter what anywhere you go. The neighborhood is nice. There are very cute towns along the Hudson River about 5-10 minutes away by car and a huge mall with tons of restaurants, theaters, Target etc. about the same driving distance in the other direction.

  • Mellie97 - can I get tons of info on the OT program from too? Thanks
