Was there a mommy here

who was doing or planning on doing ASL with their kid/s?  D&M maybe?  I was just wondering how that was going.

I checked a book out at the library and it said to start around 6 months, and usually a month later you'll start to see them signing.  I'm impatient to start but know I'll also be impatient to see him sign and I have to wait for him to get some control over his hands first!

Re: Was there a mommy here

  • Keep with it!  You will see your child signing in no time!!
  • I bought the book but haven't busted it out yet.  I have been so busy with the move I haven't had time for anything.  Sad

Will it work if I only work with him on weeknights and on the weekends, or is this something that needs to be done all day everyday with him?

I just wonder if it will be worth it if daycare doesn't do it too...

  • We sign with Mere. She does milk, more, drink and all done. She's also developed her own "eat" sign... I ask her if she wants breakfast/lunch/snack/dinner and she'll chomp her mouth like she's chewing if she does. I really meant to do more with her, but she understands what we say so much that it's not necessary unless she's having a total meltdown. We started with milk around 6 months and it took until probably 8 months before she understood, then I think she actually signed it around 9. The others came shortly after that.

  • One of my best friends does this with her baby (she used a book and 2 videos).  It is so cool!  She started at 10 months and this is her baby signing at 13 months:

I think the best thing about her daughter being able to sign is that she doesn't whine very much b/c she can just communicate.

  • We did the basics of milk, more, and eat. I tried a few more with Allison but didn't keep up with it on a regular basis. However, what did happen was that she communicates a lot with her own signs. She is very good at "playing charades"

Allison was a little slower to talk; she just is now really starting to talk more at age three. As an outsider people could look at the situation and think

    a) siging or using her hands slowed her development because she did that instead of using words

    b) learning to make her own signs was great and helped the situation because I could for the most part understand what she wanted.

I look at it as B.

For now I would just start with milk and use that sign whenever you feed him. Once he gets more activitive and esp when he moves on to puffs or cherrios, that is an easy way to each him the sign for more.  Just give him one at a time and sign more and give him another.
