Which is more EF -Paint?

Using paint you already have (which is not low VOC) or going out and buying new no/low VOC paint?

I want to paint our 2nd bedroom in the next month or 2 and I already have something that is more or less the color that I want. (My mom bought it for her kitchen, but never used it).

I plan on painting when the weather cools off, so that I can open all of the windows, put a fan in and close the room off from the rest of the house.

Thoughts?

Re: Which is more EF -Paint?

  • Well, using what you have is better from an environmental standpoint, but using no/low VOC paints is better for your health.  From what I have read, the VOCs from paint will be released into the air long after they are dry, even though the odor goes away.

I'd test a little on the wall to see if I really liked the color and decide from there.  For me, free would probably win if I loved the color (unless maybe it's a kid's bedroom).  Otherwise, I'd give away the paint on freecycle or something, and buy what I wanted.

  • I would say using the paint you already have is more EF.
