Where to buy daylillies in bulk?

Can anyone recommend an online retailer or catalog that sells daylillies in bulk to individual customers (as opposed to wholesale to other stores)?  I would like to do some mass plantings as cheaply as possible.

  • Here's a thread I found on Gardenweb asking the same question:

Also, it may not hurt to try calling a few daylily growers. They may work with you. One person in the thread mentioned Oakes' Daylilies. I'd suggest calling them as well. They have a great selection of daylilies.

Thanks.  I saw that thread yesterday.  I can't figure out how to work the Lilly Auction thing.  Matthew Kaskel didn't have any shipping or prices.  I may call Oakes, but the prices on their site were kind of high. (e.g., $9 per plant).  Not sure how much cheaper they would be in bulk.

  • If you are not too picky about variety I would explore local options.  Friends, neighbors, garden clubs, and garden club sales in the spring.  If you dig up a small patch of established daylillies you can divide them and get a lot of plants for your efforts.
  • You can even try craigslist for freecycle to see if anyone wouldn't mind you digging up a few from their yard.  A lot of local people in my area also sell perenials they grow in their yard.
  • I've bought Happy Returns Day Lillies and liriope sprigs on ebay. They were extremely inexpensive and all are still alive.
  • The nurseries will discount their stock in the fall so they don't have to overwinter all of it.  You may be able to make a deal with locally owned nurseries where you can talk to the owner.
  • Thanks everyone!  I take a friend's splits every year, but she never has as many as I need.  I will check Craig's List and Freecycle.
