Anyone know anything about Scotland County?
DH just got offered a job teaching there... We're now in a tizzy trying to decide if we should pick up and move. Total lifestyle change for us.
Re: Anyone know anything about Scotland County?
I used to teach two counties over from there. It is VERY rural, with pretty low performing schools. Think rural as in one high school for the whole county, one Wal-Mart for the whole county...most modern "conveniences" are an hour or so away. I am from Michigan originally (metro Detroit area) so this was a HUGE change of pace for me. After two years there DH and I were going stir crazy, so we left and moved to Raleigh which we love.
Scotland Co is not far from Fayetteville which is a decent sized city (and has Fort Bragg which I think is the world's largest army base), but some people do call it Fayette-Nam. It's not a beautiful area.
I sound really negative, but it's not terrible. Scotland is maybe an hour and a half from the beach! If you're looking in NC I'd recommend the Raleigh area, Charlotte northern suburbs like Huntersville, the mountains like Asheville, or the beach like Wilmington. Hope that helps! NC is a wonderful place to live but the rural areas don't have much to offer.
Thank you! My grandmother lived in Asheville briefly and I seem to remember that being nice, but it's been ages.
I was worried about the rural area -- not many places for me to work.
We had to turn it down... realized we couldn't afford to move. (And this is scary since we're now both unemployed). But I really like North Carolina, and I know it's fabulous. If it'd been Raleigh or Charlotte it'd have been easier to make the leap!
Knowing that information makes having turned it down a little easier.
You have already turned the offer down, but dont count this area out. Yes it is rural, yes it is small, but the cost of living is much cheaper and well, just look at me - you can find fabulous people in the area. LOL
Laurinburg has grown over the past couple of years and there are also areas surrounding if you need more shopping, like Lumberton, Fayetteville, Florence, SC. You are like 1.5 hours from the beach and a couple more hours from the mountains. So if something were to ever come up again, visit you never know what you may find.
