backing up digital photos?

What is the best way to back up our digital photos? They are all saved on my laptop, and I think it is going to die soon. I'd like to save them so they don't die with the compter. Burn them to a disc, save on a thumb drive thingy? Something else?

Re: backing up digital photos?

  • I have all of the ones I care about on Shutterfly, as well as ALL of them on a raided (makes additional copies of itself) external hard drive. Important ones have an additional copy on another hard drive that I keep in my desk at work.

  • Our website (text and photos) is backed up on two hard drives on our server (raided) then synced to the two hard drives on our desk top then synced to my lap top then to his then to my iphone then to his and also on discs distributed to family members and a thumb drive kept in a fire proof box. Yeah, we're extreme but we will NEVER have to worry about losing our pics. One of the perks of running your own server.

We don't trust sites like shutter fly and such. What happens if they have major issues???? At least this way we have control.

For most people a thumb drive or external hard drive should do.

  • We have an external, but we also use photobucket.com or something similar. My hubby is a tech and recommended we do that since they have huge servers and where/how they store them is the best. Honestly, even if you delete them they still will be there. Having one at home for us is great but there is always the risk of someone breaking in and of course something happening to the house. It's a bit of a risk using hardware like thumb drives and externals bc of their mobility. If they die or get damaged you'll need to pay for someone to try to recover the info and that might not even be possible =/.
  • External hard drive AND online storage.

  • I backup ALL of my stuff (documents, photos, etc.) to an external hardrive every 6 months. I used to back them up to a disk but eventually it became a huge task of 7 disks per backup and then sometimes I'd lose the disks. I just like the external hard drives anymore. They make them so small that I can store it in the desk drawer and no big deal and you can find them for about $50 now.

  • After I had two external drives fail on me, I am all about the online storage solutions. I use JungleDisk, and that way I'm protected via their backups. They have backups of their backups, and their business is storing files... so no matter what happens to my computer, my files and photos are safe :) And easily accessible anywhere I go, which is also a bonus!
