Shower & Wedding Gift?

I'm going to a Wedding shower for a work friend next weekend.

What's the etiquette on presents? Should I get two gifts? One for the wedding and one for the shower? Can I just get her a nice shower gift, and not bring anything to the wedding?

I didn't really have a shower for my wedding, so I'm not really sure what is standard practice.

Re: Shower & Wedding Gift?

  • yes, 2 different gifts, I usually give something from their registry for the shower and money for the wedding
  • yes 2 different gifts is what I usually do...there are a few exceptions to the rules when I do a larger wedding gift instead.

I do exactly what she said.

If you don't go to the shower or wedding you're not obligated to send a gift for the event you're missing.  But going to both = buying a gift for both.

  • Yup, two gifts.

Depending on how well I know the bride & groom and the location of each event, I'll do some combination of the following:

Small registry gift for the shower/larger registry gift for the wedding

Registry gift for the shower/gift card or check for the wedding

Homemade gift for one event/registry gift for the other.

I agree that if you don't attend the shower, you don't have to send a gift. I, however, always send a wedding gift (or a card, at the VERY least) even if I'm unable to attend.

  • Like someone above said, attending both means two gifts.  I generally get something little for a shower gift ($20 or so), then something bigger for the wedding gift.

Follow your local custom re: giving cash.  It's the norm in some parts of the country and not done at all in others.

  • I agree, going to each event = giving gift.  That said, we did have several people give us really big gifts at our shower and then later told us that it was our shower AND wedding gift.  Personally, I really appreciated this.

  • I would say that one gift is plenty, but that's just my opinion as a newlywed. I was not offended at all by not receiving two gifts from guests. I will give two separate gifts only if it is a really good friend or close family member.

I agree that one bigger gift off of the registry is really nice sometimes too. I would only go this route if you are going to spend $100+ on the gift. When I got married it was nice getting the one big gift from someone because it was a gift I would never treat myself to. I would give it at the shower if I just gave one gift. You would feel odd not bringing a gift to the shower and to bring it to the wedding would be one more item that had to be packed up and transported afterwards.

  • Okay, I went shopping today and bought two gifts. A slightly smaller one for the shower and something bigger for the wedding. I think she will like both items :)

I agree. I recently was married and people who brought gifts to showers did not bring gifts to the wedding and I did not expect it. If it's a good friend or relative, then I would bring 2 gifts. I think you do what you are comfortable with.
