how often do you fertilize?

I have all new landscaping. How often should I fertilize?

Re: how often do you fertilize?

  • Like, with fertilizer? I never have. Isn't that all like petrochemicals? I mulch and use compost, lots of compost. I get regular compost but I also get a lot of free composted manure off craigslist.

  • Fertilize what?  Most landscaping shrubs don't need fertilizer.

Potted plants would like a little Miracle-Gro once a month or so as directed by the can, since pot soil can be quickly stripped of nutrients.

Some evergreens and azaleas like fertilizer, but it needs to be applied at certain times of the year.  You'll have to look up your plants.

Rose bushes do require fertilizer, so you'll need to identify the specific variety and read up on its needs.

  • I sprinkle a little slow release fertilizer (Miracle Grow Shake and Feed) in the hole when I plant something new and that's it.

  • I use Dr. Earth organic fertilizer, which says every 2 months year-round. I use it more... about 1x month from spring through summer... then, do nothing in the fall and winter. I also use Dr. Earth rose fertilizer, but have not been impressed with the results. This summer is the first time that we got Bayer 3 for roses, which says that it fertilizes and fights pests and disease. It works MUCH better. I try to be organic with most things. The Dr Earth and spraying vinegar and water on pests was just not working for my roses. The other multi-purpose Dr Earth has worked well on just about everything. We also toss in some organic compost every so often.
