total beginner here ?

I just started my first garden, well in the spring I did. Kinda a pregnancy project. I planted peas, tomatoes, green beans, potatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, lettuce, carrots and broccoli.  I know I screwed up with some things, I planted too close or too many seeds together. But I don't know when to 'pick' the lettuce. There are no heads on anything yet and dont know if there will be. Same with the broccoli. And my green beans are totally taking over the garden. Can I cut some of the greens bean vines or should I just leave them be?

Any help/tips is very much appreciated!!! TIA!!!

  • Gosh... I'm not really sure, but I had to just look and not respond!

What do you mean the lettuce doesn't have heads? Is it supposed to? I never plant head lettuce because it doesn't do well here. You can eat lettuce pretty much at any point.

Are your bean vines staked up? If not you can probably still do this, I don't think they put down runners.

I'm a big 'do and learn' kind of gardener... I try to read books and plan, but really, I just plant stuff and see how it goes. So next year you will learn to give things more space! You can really plant pretty intensively though, you just have to do it right. There are lots of books on intensive gardening, square foot gardening, mini-farming etc, but mostly I just plant bigger things leaving lots of space and then fill in with smaller things once I see how its all going.
