We're having a BBQ next month and my DH wants to get a KEG(in addition to the others drinks we'll have)!
Has anyone ever done this?
How many people did you have and what size keg did you get?
I am so used to buying bottles I am afraid we will run out!
TIA
Re: Talk to me about Kegs?
They come in a 1/2 keg and 1/4 keg sizes.
They weigh a ton so have able bodied men on hand that can go pick it up.
The 1/2 keg is about 7 cases worth of beer and the 1/4 keg is about 3 1/2 cases.
There were about 100 people and there was also a full bar. There was plenty of beer with the 1/2 keg.
HTH!
They guys where you rent it should be helpful in regards to typical serving sizes vs. # of peeps in your area.
Added bonus...its a lot greener.
Less waste if everyone keeps their same cup all night. Even better go to the dollar store and buy beer mugs and attach a name tag to each one for your guests that they can take home at the end of the night.
Thanks Ladies!
LOVE the idea about tagging the beer mugs so they can use them all night.
We've gotten kegs a few times. Once we had 50 people and we got two kegs of different beers. We finished half of each, so we probably could have finished just one.
We had another party of 55 and consumed about half that keg, but we had a FULL bar of liquor available, so plenty of people were drinking other things.
A friend recently got a pony keg (1/4) for a party of just 20 and it was way too much. Maybe if it had been 20 guys, but with 15 girls and 5 guys, it was too much beer.
Kegs really don't last after you tap them, and they have to stay ice cold, so only get what you think you'll use right then.
Don't forget to rent the tap!! Surefire way to kill a party

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Also, check with your local grocery store. If they rent kegs, you will get the best deals there.
We got a 1/4 keg for about 30 ppl (an all day thing) and it was perfect. We have also purchased 3 kegs for a weekend adventure and had about a half left.
Sharpie's on red cups works well for labeling. Enjoy the party!
beware...they don't actually sell full kegs on the retail market, only to bars. For this reason, many people call the quarter kegs half kegs and half kegs "kegs".
I think the quarter keg is good for about 40 people and under. But even if you are having more than that, i would only get a half keg if you were having at least 80 people. Why, I've seen a lot of parties where the half keg doesn't get "kicked" and as hard as you try to reuse that beer the next day, it's usually pretty flat. For that reason, I generally try to stick the quarter keg, then have a case or two of additional beer that you can pull out, and still in the kegs spot, once it runs out. I think it's just better to have your left overs in cans or bottles, that way you know it won't go to waste.
If you like "good" beer, you can go for a pony keg which is generally a sixth of a keg. If you have any breweries near you, you can get a great deal.
You can buy full kegs in Indiana. We are actually getting a full keg for this weekend.
