I grew up in a tiny, tiny town in Northern Minnesota. Years ago the school district decided to merge the elementary school and high school into one building to save some money. The elementary school was then rented out to local companies. My Dad was actually one of the first stores when he opened up his pharmacy in there. But other than him I didn't really ever pay attention to what else moved in there.
Then over the weekend while I was visiting I was showing my Dad my eco-blog and he saw my article about Coconut Oil and started asking about it. I gave him my little speech about the awesomeness that is coconut oil and then he goes on to tell me that there is a coconut oil company in his building! My jaw dropped. A Coconut Oil in MY small town in MY Dad's building and I never knew? How was this possible? So he showed me the website... OMG!
Wilderness Family Naturals is the company. I was blown away that a company like this could exist there because I grew up there- you'd think I would know! So I e-mailed them and asked for a tour and then took a tour this afternoon. It was great meeting them and awesome to walk into my third grade classroom and see barrels upon barrels of coconut oil right where my desk was! And my 5th grade classroom is where they store the rest of the coconut products and when you walk in and inhale you are greeted with the wonderful scent of coconut! This company took up about 8 classrooms (3 of which I'd spent a year in!) and employs 30 people. Right in my hometown! I NEVER would have imagined this and I'm still shocked.
Anywho, you should all check them out. It's a great company and their prices are fantastic! I have a box full of their products that I haven't had a chance to try yet but once I do I will report back (and of course I'm going to blog about them like crazy).

Ode To Coconut Oil (on my blog). It just a few of the many, many uses of coconut oil and why I love it so much.
Basically, I cook with it, I make moisterizer out of it, my deodorant contains it, I use it as an intense conditioner for my hair, and for my salt scrub! But read the blog post, it goes into way more detail!
I used it once in place of shortening and that didn't work out so well. It did texture wise but flavor wise I did taste a bit of coconut. But that was using it as a shortening, not as an oil, make sense?
I usually only use it when following recipes on this blog, but I plan on experimenting more when I have a real kitchen!
