A not funny practical joke (long)

...so last night just before 10, my cell phone starts ringing with a Syracuse area code number.

I answer it and a distorted voice (sounded male) on the other end, says "Is this V?"

and I say, "yes, Who's this?"

the voice says "I can see you, you stupid b!tc#"

and i say again. a bit more panicky, "Who is this?"

Husband hears me, and walks into the kitchen to check on me.

The voice: "I'm your worst nightmare b!tc#, I can see you through your big picture window - with your limpy a$$ dog"

At this point I am shaking and nearly in tears and I just hang up the phone. I telll DH about the call, and once I get to the part about the dog, DH says "call the cops"

Side note: We spend about a good 5 minutes looking for the police or sheriffs dept's # in the phone book  - we didnt want to call 911, because this is not an emergency... we couldnt find their number!

While we are searching for the cops' number, my sister calls my phone (this is not unusual for her to call this late).... I tell her I cant talk right now, and that Ill call her back in a few. She keeps pestering me,and so I hang up. She calls back again, I tell DH to answer it, because im still trying to find the cops' #. He ignores the call. Sister calls DHs phone, I answer annoyed, and say "Its not a big deal ill callyou back" and she blurts out "IT WAS ME!"

I stop and ask her how she did that - because it was a Syracuse # and she lives in CT.... she tells me there is this new Droid app, that lets you make up a fake number to call people. Then she says "wasnt that a good joke?!" and I say "no - it was not a good joke, it was scary" and then hang up on her.

Now im annoyed, but not mad - biut I am trying to watch Rescue Me, which had started at 10 - Sis calls me back 3 times and I ignore the call and finally my mom calls me... and  says "sis feels really bad, etc". I gte sis on the phone and tell her im not mad, and she apologized and realized she took it too far.

But the idea of that app is really scary - and could be very stalkerish! I hope that take that one off line....

Re: A not funny practical joke (long)

  • Yeah, that is scary. I would have done the same thing you did.

  • Why would they make THAT app?  Great to help all the stalkers out there.  I hope they get rid of it - what GOOD is it?
  • I'd be pissed if that happened to me.  Really not funny.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • That totally would have freaked me out!  Not cool.

As an aside though, DH found this thing on FB where you can send (funny!) prank calls to your friends from Captain Morgan.  He sent one about a "Couger" to our friend telling him that she had a great time, etc.  And he sent one to me with a guy saying "Yeah, I saw the way you were looking at me in the grocery store.  (DH's name) gave me your number and I thought we could hook up sometime."  Hilarious!

  • I thought fake numbers were illegal, because of terrorism.  That is messed up, I would have called the cops too, basically someone implying they are standing outside my window making threats.
