I was told this morning that I got the job and that they would like me to come out to get my bearings... learn where the metra is, etc... just waiting on the doctor to call and talk numbers. Can't plan a trip to Chicago to look at housing if I don't know what the paycheck will look like! Come on, Big Money! Big Money! No whammies!

My issue with Hyde Park isn't safety-- the univeristy area is great, home to some very welathy people, and I think it gets a somewhat unwarranted bad rap from the 20-and-30 something contingent who lives on the nothside and in Bucktown/Wicker Park. There is violent and non-violent crime in every part of the city-- trendy enclaves to the north and west included. I lived in LP for years while an undergrad and graduate student at DePaul, and lived in Uptown (Margate Park) for the past two years (another much maligned 'hood). I felt very safe in both places, but there were several attacks on young women in DePaul and Lakeview when I was at DePaul. My husband, who lived at the intersection of Lincoln and Diversey (Lakeview), had his car broken into twice in three years.
To me, the biggest problem with Hyde Park is ease of access to the rest of the city. The heart of U of C isn't as well connected by el as some of the city's other universities, and coming home from the loop late at night might require a train-to-bus transfer (which can be a little intimidating at night). Driving into the loop is easy via Lake shore Drive, though.
I also feel like popular retail hasn't completely bought into Hyde Park. You won't find nearly the concentration of fun shops, trendy eateries, and crunchy grocers that you will in some of the perennially popular north and west side neighborhoods. I think when you're actually able to visit, ask an apartment finding service or realtor to help you explore a few different neighborhoods. Only then will you really be able to weigh the benefits of proximity to work against what Hyde Park (and other neighborhoods) can offer in terms of amenities.
Good luck!
