I have an LG french door / freezer on the bottom fridge. Here's the issue: when you close the doors, the light doesn't turn off. I didn't realize this, and so the light stayed on today, for who knows how long. When I came home from work, the food on the top shelf was HOT (melted butter
that is NO fun to pick up). I just read that this is a VERY common prob with LG. If you are thinking of getting one, you probably shouldn't.
I've turned off the breaker and removed the light bulbs ( The plastic part that holds the bulbs is all sorts of singed) and aired out the top part. Everything in the freezer is FINE (my ice was still in cube form - little wins).
Is it safe to turn the breaker back on and use the fridge sans lights? At least until I can get a repair man out here, or by a new fridge which will have to be delivered.
thoughts?
Re: LG fridge issues (light bulbs)
My Kenmore Elite did this as well. I'm assuming it's all the same manufacturer. Mine got so hot it melted a pizza box on the top shelf and I came into find my entire house smelling like fire. My plastic housing around the bulb was also fried.
We had to call a repairman to get ours fixed. It was a really easy but not so cheap fix. Apparently there's some defective sensor that causes the light to remain on even when off. The company covered it though because they know they're at fault but it hasn't made recall lists yet for some reason that made no sense to me.
I just unscrewed the bulb until the repairman came 2 days later. It wasn't an issue.
