I went there to shop tonight because we needed some fish and it isn't the easiest or cheapest to find in our other local health stores.
I must have forgotten but everything was packaged. There were no loose greens or other ramdom veggies, just a small selection of fruit. Also none of the fish seemed to be on the sustainable list. I did get some salmon because we needed some and it was the one fish that I couldn't prove wasn't on the sustainable list. It was wild caught but didn't mention from where. There was also no bulk food offered.
What a disappointment. I used to think that it was the coolest store. That was until I got to know a health stores that combined organic food and eco friendlyness.
I guess I'll only go there to buy broth and brown rice pasta, both of which are considerably cheaper there.
Re: Very disappointed in Trader Joes
I wish there was a TJ's around us.

I have also had similar experiences at TJ's and I also think it is completely overrated. The only thing you failed to mention was the bored and unhelpful staff.
I have also found yogurt at TJ's that contains modified corn starch (I know! The horror!) If I wanted that, I wouldn't drive out of my way to get it--I'd just get the .69 Yoplait at my local.
Yes...it's true, I think TJ's sux..that could probably be my green vent.
Hmm...maybe that's why it tastes so much better than the other organic yogurts I've tried. ::off to check the ingredient list::
Nope, not the kind I bought.
I like TJs as a supplement to my regular store, but it definitely isn't a one-stop-shop for green groceries.
Trader Joes makes me happy for two reasons:
Midnight Moo - I searched for 3 years to find a good alternative to Hershey's syrup that didn't have HFCS in it, and MMoo wins.
Snickerdoodle cookie dough
Other than that, I also think it's overrated. Isn't there also some drama about how they're unwilling to back up their claims about sourcing?
LOL!!
I've found snickerdoodle and other flavors of all natural pre-made cookie dough at Whole Foods--and..they also have..all natural refrigerator cinnamon rolls. Like Pillsbury only all natural. When I found those, it was as good a day as when I found the all-natural hot dogs. (Yes, I like bad foods made with good ingredients--which may negate my earlier post about the yogurt, but fake ingredients give me migraines!)
Oh, that's good to know! We hardly ever shop at Whole Foods anymore because we love our local store so much. But, I haven't been super impressed with the cookie dough selection. And I know what you mean about the all-natural hot dogs and eating bad foods made with good ingredients. I'm right there with you! : )
I don't know. Anyone who calls TJ's a "health food store" either hasn't been in one or is an idiot.
I like TJ's but it doesn't claim to be either a health food or all encompassing grocery store. It's for speciality items. That's it. Don't expect it to be something it's not and you won't be disappointed.
I have modified your quotes because I'm not much of a cookie dough fan, but I AM a fan of "bad foods" made with good ingredients as well. Pass the hot dogs because I'm in as well!! Plus, I don't have a Trader Joes within an hour and a half from me, so clearly I can live without it.

Very timely given this post.
Interesting. Thanks for posting!
