Poll: Meal Planning

Do you meal plan?

Do you follow a cookbook/website/weekly sales/wing it?

I need to start meal planning to help lower Casey's blood sugar.  Any tips, recs, advice?

Re: Poll: Meal Planning

  • I plan meals for my days off.  Usually Josh has to be at work by 6pm so by the time I get home from work he already has something made.

Have you looked into a diabetic cookbook?  Maybe even a low-carb cookbook will help also...

  • We don't meal plan...we prefer to make things fresh, so we generally only go shopping for a specific meal in mind. Makes for more frequent trips, but just something we prefer to do. I am sure by the time baby#2 comes around, we might have to revise that plan. We usually wing it...both have pretty strong cooking skills. Although we will skim over a recipe first to get the general idea, and just go from there.

Sorry that doesn't help, but have you looked at any sites that have diabetic recipes? I am sure there has got to be tons out there Big Smile

  • We shop once a week and use the meal planner on beachbody.com it gives snacks breakfast lunch and dinner and portion amounts
  • I make weekly menu plans, then i just get what i need at the store and less temptation to get things we shouldn't be eating.  Also we like to try at least 1 to 2 new recipes a week.  Like pp maybe check out a diabetic cook book and see fi there are things in there that you both like. Or like for us... CJ's job is so physical and mine well isn't so i can't eat nearly as many carbs as he can. so I make dinners that accomidate us both but without extra effort.

So like tonight I am making chicken, with a rice or pasta side with green beans... i love me some green beans... Cj will eat more rice then green  beans and i will eat more greenbeans then rice.

    HTH =)

  • i normally plan for 5 "dinner" meals a week, we usually end up going out to eat too. now that don's working nights, i have to make a bigger lunch and just a smaller dinner for dominic and i. i try to use leftovers to make another meal during the week. like if i make pulled bbq crockpot chicken, i'll make a bbq chicken pizza with the leftovers later in the week.

i've gotten a lot better about it. before i'd run to the store a million times a week getting stuff that i needed for a meal, and i'd end up spending way more picking up crap i didn't need too.

  • i also try to use the weekly ads to plan what i'm going to make, and i clip coupons. some things don likes to have every week regardless of if it's on sale or not...but i do try with everything else

  • I kind of plan. I get an idea of what I want to eat during the week, but its mostly chicken, ground turkey, pasta, fish. The rest I figure out what I have in the cabinets or need to get that may be missing. I tend to be the kind to make whatever I have available. As long as I have the meat I can figure out a side.
  • I am really bad at meal planning, we eat on the fly.  I really need to start planning better, it will save money and time.  Let me know if you find any good methods.

  • We don't meal plan. We head to the grocery store and just pick stuff up. I eat whatever DH pulls out of the fridge to cook! (He is the cook out of the two of us - I'd rather bake)
  • I plan to get invited to other peeps houses as often as possible...

ya know chicas, I've been dropping hints on here for-ev-ah....hmmmm?

  • I am an insane meal planner. I have a monthly calendar that I follow religiously. I know... I have issues. But really I just don't like to think/worry about it, so it's what works best for us. I'm sure I could save some $$$ by shopping sales, but I really just don't have time. So yes... in our household every third Weds. of the month we will be eating lasagna (sick, sick, sick... I know...) I do leave a few spaces a month for trying new recipes as well.
