Moms some feeding questions

Hi ladies,

I'm going to return a few doubles from my shower this afternoon, so I was going to pick a few things up.

1.  I'll be BFing, but pumping into bottles b/c I want Drew to be involved and I have to go back to work at 6 wks post partum.  I have a pack of the Advent newborn starter set, but I was wondering if I should get a starter set of a different brand in case he doesn't like them?

2.  Sterilizer, yes or no?  I didn't register for one, but SIL says I need to have one.

3.  The only feeding things I got at my shower were a pack of bottles and some bibs, what else do I need?

Thanks,

Mellissa

  • 1.  I'll be BFing, but pumping into bottles b/c I want Drew to be involved and I have to go back to work at 6 wks post partum.  I have a pack of the Advent newborn starter set, but I was wondering if I should get a starter set of a different brand in case he doesn't like them? I would wait to see how the baby does with the advent before buying another brand, or if you buy it, don't open it unless you need so it can be returned.

    2.  Sterilizer, yes or no?  I didn't register for one, but SIL says I need to have one.I used a microwave-type sterilizer w/Sam a couple of times, never used it the 2nd time around.  I think if you just sterilize in boiling water before 1st use, you'll be fine.  But I'm not a germaphobe, so my advice may be in the minority.

    3.  The only feeding things I got at my shower were a pack of bottles and some bibs, what else do I need?  Nursing pads, nipple cream, storage bags/bottles to build up a stash of BM in the freezer, Boppy or something similar, bottle brush.

    Unsolicited advice:

Make sure the baby is nursing well before you introduce the bottle.

My DH was very involved, but it was still much easier to nurse the baby in the middle of the night rather than wait for DH to warm up bottle and feed her.

Ask for help at the hospital....they are usually really good and that is when you may really need it.  I didn't have a LC with #1, thought I was a pro with #2, and then the LC showed me a couple of minor things and it was so much better/easier!

I returned the Avent bottles I got from my SIL, because they contain BPA and I personally am worried about BPA and I ended up getting the Born Free glass bottles... if you are not worried about BPA - then stick with the bottles you have, I think you'd be fine with them....

    2.  Sterilizer, yes or no?  I didn't register for one, but SIL says I need to have one.

I don't think you HAVE to have one - I've read that putting them in the dishwasher is just as good - I have the microwave Avent one and do like it...if you do put items in the dishwasher you'll need a dishwasher basket for the items

Burp cloths! We go through a ton of them even now - I never expected Austin to be a spitter-uperer, but he is and always has been. If you are going to use bottles, you'll probably want a couple of bottle brushes too, freezer bags for your breastmilk, breastpacks (warm/cold ones) for when your milk first comes in (it can be pretty painful/uncomfortable), nursing pads (I like the lansinoh products), lanolin, nursing bras, sleep bras (JC Penny has comfy ones), nursing cover (I used mine in the hospital while trying to establish BFing with visitors showing up)

  • Hi Mellissa!!!

I would think that you could try the bottles you have now, and if he doesn't like them or has gas issues you could always switch at that point to something else.  I wouldn't spend the money now when you don't even know what he'll need/like.

I don't have a sterilizer.  Never used one and never saw the need to have one.  I just washed the bottles either by hand or in the dishwasher.  If you're super into germs and all that, then sure go ahead and get one.   Brianna is as healthy as they come and we've never had any issues!

Since you'll be pumping you may want to pick up some freezer bags to store your milk in.  Later on once you've figured out what bottles works best for you, you'll need to get some bigger bottles- 8oz.  But, it will be a few months before he's out of the 4oz bottles.  Having a ton of burp cloths around is great to have with those frequent spit ups, as well as lots of bibs.

Hope that helps!  How are you feeling??  I can't believe you are 31 weeks!!

  • Congratulations on being so far along!!! I hope things are going better for you with this half of your pregnancy :)

    1) If I were you, I'd add another brand to your registry but not buy it.  That way, if you need to try another, you can send anyone to the store to pick it up- nice and simple.  Their return policy has become more strict, so you wouldn't want to be out the money if it's not needed.

    2) I don't think you need a sterilizer, but I don't use bottles often.  I have Medela steam bags that you can sterilize something in the microwave with that I sometimes use.  Otherwise, I'm a fan of washing in soapy water then boiling them the old fashioned way.

    3) You need some burp cloths- the traditional white cloth diapers work well.

  • Mellissa, I was JUST thinking about you today!!!  How are you doing??

We all have our opinions on bottles ... I personally love Born Free, so does Alyssa, we've *never* had a problem w/ them, ever.  Basically, at this point, pick one, go w/ it, and then change if your Baby doesn't like them.  I've heard Avent is fine.  =)

I have sterilizing bags, and I *never use them*.  The only reason I have them is because Alyssa had thrush and I wanted to be sure that her things were as clean as they could possibly be.  However, you can also boil hot water and sterilize your stuff that way, too, which I personally thought was easier.  However, being that you're going to be at work, you may want to get a sterilizer.  Born Free has an expensive one, First Years (I think???) has one that is far cheaper but isn't BPA Free.  Not sure the BPA free matters w/ a sterilizer.

I think that all you need for feeding at this point is what you got.  Do you have burp cloths?  You may want to get some of those.  You won't need to think about bowls, spoons, etc. till Baby is getting ready for food.  OH!!  Also, those food-net-thingies are GREAT when they aren't eating food yet ... WE LOVE THEM!!  Alyssa has peaches and watermelon out of them right now.

EDIT:  I'm such a dummy.  DUH!!  Boppies (I swear by having two), nipple cream (Lansinoh!), freezer bags, pumping supplies, bottle brushes, a drying rack (First Years makes a super-duper spinning rack that I can't do w/out) ... I think that's it ...
