Opinions...

The position I am interviewing for is in Encinitas.  Is this a safe area? More expensive than downtown?  Less expensive?  We have two dogs that need a small patch of lawn, so we are hoping to rent a house.... a very, very, small house.

TIA!

Re: Opinions...

  • Personally, I love Encinitas. It's a great beach community, and has a good food + art scene.

Like any city, it's going to have better areas than others, but I think most tend to be dog friendly. I've always found it to be cheaper (and safer) than most/all of Downtown -- assuming you're not vying for beachfront property, that is.

  • A few of my coworkers live in Encinitas.  Its a typical middle to upper middle class beach community.  Rent west of the I-5 will be higher than rent east of the I-5.

Look at Carlsbad, Solana Beach and Del Mar for more housing options.

  • I love Encinitas. Carlsbad is right next door and really nice too.
  • Interviewed in Encinitas and at Scripps downtown...  both went very well!  I should hear something next week!  I'm starting to think La Mesa may be a better option pricewise....  starting to look for rentals in that area too.  Thank you for all your feedback!

La Mesa would be good if you end up working in Downtown.  If you end up in Encinitas, you really do NOT want to do that commute every single day.  You will hit traffic all the way home in the evenings and its not fun.  I have coworkers that do the commute from La Mesa/College Area/El Cajon to Carlsbad (just north of Encinitas) and it takes most of them 45-60 minutes to get home in the evening and thats with normal traffic!

You can also look at places in Scripps Ranch (its pricey but you can find some deals), Poway and Rancho Penasquitos--they are all inland areas that would be closer to Encinitas.

  • Thanks again!  I am considering taking both jobs until I feel comfortable with the cost of living in SD.  One is 3 nights a week and the other is 2 nights a week for at least the first few months.  So, the commute would be backwards from the normal person.  That may be a good thing.

We have to rescue dogs (pit bulls) and the current stressor is finding a rental place that will be okay with them.  Definitely looking for a house.  I heard some/many areas have pit bull bans or at least landlords seem to post a lot of breed restrictions.  It BS to me because its the same as saying they have "ethnic restrictions"  or something equally racially biased.  I wish they would have restrictions against thugs and drug dealers instead of innocent dogs that have been lucky enough to be placed with owners that take care of them.  Grr... thats my rant for the day.  Still casually looking at different areas online while waiting for final confirmation of our offers!

  • There are quite a few pitbulls out here in San Diego County so you should be able to find a place that will allow them.  Most apartment complexes wont because of their size but there are some pretty cool private homeowners who will rent to pittie parents.

We do have a pittie rescue in San Diego and they might be able to help you out in your housing search.
