I just have to laugh at myself for this. I was making pickles this weekend, and the recipes all seemed to mention using "pickling salt." I didn't know what pickling salt was, so I googled. It's iodine free and finely ground so it will dissolve easily. Source also mentioned it can be difficult to find, and you can substitute kosher salt as long as you make sure it's dissolved completely.
Of course, I had to make things hard for myself. DH and I went to Wegman's, because Wegman's has everything, right? In a word, no. After wandering around the store and asking different employees, we found they had two canning displays, filled with jars, lids, at least half a dozen different kinds of pectin, but no pickling salt. I did buy the "pickle crisp" though (along with a few other groceries), so I guess it wasn't a total waste.
Time spent in search of pickling salt: more than 30 minutes
Time to dissolve kosher salt in water: ~5 minutes (2 minutes to boil water, and 2-3 minutes to stir salt into hot water)
