Those in the know - what's the scoop on MSC Certified fish?

Jumping over from EFF with a couple of questions:

A tiny bit of digging brought up Unilever as one of the founders of the MSC (red flags, much?) so I was wondering if anyone has more information or knowledge they'd be willing to share.  Is there another way to know if your fish is being sustainably caught?  Or how "on the up and up" this organization really is?

Also... I saw MSC-certified frozen salmon at Target today, of course for much less than what I bought at Whole Foods (we're new to cooking and eating fish).  Theoretically, as long as I'm buying just plain fillets, they should be the same, right?  Or am I missing something?

Re: Those in the know - what's the scoop on MSC Certified fish?

  • Here in the Los Angeles eco community, this has been a hot topic. I'm in the land use & urban forestry side of things, so I rely on my friends at Heal the Bay to know what they're talking about when it comes to ocean issues. They regularly cite or recommend MSC so I tend to feel they are credible. Hope that helps somewhat.
