Party idea clever or cheesy?
Five years ago this October my dad had a ruptured aneurysm. It was a two month ordeal that left him literally on the brink of death several times during this period. While we, as a family, always keep it in mind, I was thinking that since it's been five years, we should celebrate with family and some of his good friends. I want to throw him a "stayin' alive" party. Is this idea clever or cheesy? The more I think about it, the cheesier I think it is.

I think it's cheesy, but in a really sweet sort of way, and what better thing is there to celebrate than the continued life of someone you love?
I think you should really play up the 70's vibe of the "Stayin' Alive" theme, and even gear the food that way as much as you can, i.e. fondue http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/597360

Agreed. I'd get your family's take on it. If their ok with it, then it sounds like fun, even if it is cheesy fun. : )
I don't think it's cheesey at all. I had a brain tumor "tumorversary" on my one-year, which happens to be near Halloween. I had fun with it and made it macabre and Halloween-y, with lots of skull and brainish things.
It was a huge milestone -- celebrate it!
