I clogged my sink

I have two weeks off (with full-time daycare) before I start my practicum so I've dedicated these two weeks to re-organizing our house. I found a container of powdered cranberry lemonade that none of us liked so I dumped it all down our sink and turned the water on, figuring that since it's water-dissolvable that it'd turn into lemonade and flush down the pipes with no problem.

But of course that didn't work. The powder coagulated in our pipes and I have a sink full of lemonade. I've left it alone for three hours thinking that the water would slowly work it's magic, but the water level hasn't gone down at all. I threw a bit of Drano down there but it's done nothing.

Any suggestions?

Re: I clogged my sink

  • Pour in about a cup of baking soda. Then follow it with a couple cups of white vinegar. Once it is done fizzing dump down a couple litres of boiling water.

    * Just saw that you put Drano in. I'm not sure if vinegar/b. soda will mix okay with that stuff. Maybe just try the boiling water first. If not, go buy yourself a drain snake. Or go under the sink and see if there is a cleanout that you can open and root around in there to get out the clog (have gloves, rags and a bucket ready first).

  • I have unclogged my sink before by using the toilet plunger. If you can get enough pressure in there, it should push the clog down.  Other than that, I second the snake.

  • I'd try the boiling water first - should dissolve the powder better than the water sitting there.  Don't stand to close though, and open a window, I have a feeling that'll increase the draino fumes.

Otherwise, I think a snake is in your future.  Sucks!

  • yay! THe boiling water didnt work, so I had to ladle it all out of the sink, but your guys' suggestion of a pipe snake made me think. I spent a while trying to find something that fit down the holes in the trap in the drain and eventually came up with three sticks of linguine, tied together with fishing line. I poked it down the drain about 50 million times, being very careful not to break it (because that's all I needed, raw linguine noodles stuck down there too) and after five minutes of mindless poking with my poking apparatus and watching the water in the drain get pinker and pinker as more of the powder dissolved, I felt the linguine noodles punch through and the clog and it drained. Thanks for the suggestions!!
