considering a trip to San Diego

Hi all, thinking about taking a trip with my husband in February or March and one of many spots were thinking about is SD.  Whats the weather really like that time of year there?  Is there plenty of things usually going on?  Any recommendations on hotels that are affordable and yet really nice?  How long would it realistically take for us to drive to LA if thats something we decided to do? Thanks so much for any info, it would be my first time anywhere on the west coast :)

Re: considering a trip to San Diego

  • Weather will probably be in the 60s - low 70s during the day. So it won't be super cold, but it won't be beach weather. It may also be rainy, it seems to rain a lot in February.

Re: SD to LA drive time - It depends on what part of San Diego you are staying and what part of LA you are going to... assuming downtown San Diego, I'd say  3 - 4 hours??? It really depends on traffic and where you are going in LA. Personally, when I'd have friends visit and they wanted to go to LA it seemed to be more trouble than it was worth. The traffic is just so horrible and things are so spread out. You waste a lot of time on the road. I'd stick around SD, but maybe I am biased. :)

As far as things going on, well there is always something to do in San Diego so I don't think finding something to do would be a problem.

Can't really help with the hotel question... I've never stayed in a hotel in San Diego so haven't really researched it. :)  That also depends on what part you'd like to stay in. Hopefully someone else can help with that one.

  • Weather in Feb and March can be all over the place.  We have had cold spells (it even snowed about 15 mins east of my place) and temps upwards of 100!  Be prepared for anything!

Ive stayed at the Manchester Grand Hyatt (downtown), the Hyatt in La Jolla, and the Four Seasons in Carlsbad.  I LOVED the Four Seasons but it can seiously trash your budget.

LA is totally doable in a day trip.  It is best to do it on a weekend day since traffic is a bit lighter.  You can take advantage of the carpool lanes and the tolls roads which can make the trip a little shorter.  I can make it to the Hollywood area in about 2 hrs.  I can get to Carson/Redondo Beach area in about 90 minutes using the toll road.  Im also in the north part of San Diego county so that helps a bit!  Another option to get to LA--take Amtrak.  You can do a bit of sightseeing (it travels along the coast from Oceanside to San Clemente) and you dont have to drive!
