Moving to Richmond next summer
Hi, I'm a newlywed down here in Raleigh, North Carolina. DH has applied to a grad program at VCU and we're hoping to move to Richmond this next summer or fall for his program.
He's a nurse and I work in environmental consulting. Anyone have any advice for places to live or cool things to do?
Re: Moving to Richmond next summer
Congratulations!
I live in the RVA, and the best advice I can give you is figure out your dynamic. If you are interested in being close to the malls, lots of people, and suburban atsmosphere, you should look into whats available in the West End.
If you prefer a more laid back, urban scene with local restaurants, bars, and lots of college kids hanging around, you should look into the Fan.
Personally I prefer something in between. I think around Libbie Ave is really nice. They've recently renovated several of the older warehouses in Richmond and the ones I've seen are really nice. In fact, a friend just moved into the Southern Stovework Lofts over off of Hermitage, and they are really nice w/ controlled access, lots of open duct work, and huge windows.
They are also several areas of the city that I would stay away from. If you are interested in know, PM me. I wont bash them publicly.
As far as fun things to do in this city.....there's plenty. The VMFA just recently finished a huge renovation, the Virginia Historical Society is right next door. There are so many restaurants here, any kind of food you can think of you can get. There's Byrd Park, Maymont, Agecroft Hall, Carytown, the Canal Walk, Shockoe Bottom, more festivals then you can shake a stick at, 17th Street Farmers Market, the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, and some of the best thrift stores you'll ever see.
HTH, if you have any questions, feel free to PM me. GL!
That's funny....I have a friend that lives in Sothern Stove as well They are really cool.
Smalerie pretty much summed it up. The southside or up north toward Ashland are also on the suburban side, but a little less expensive than the west end, although further out depending on where you are going.
I live in the far west end in Short Pump and love it, but that's the type of atmosphere I like. We do go to the Fan and downtown a lot for dinner and drinks.
I live in Church Hill and absolutely love it. Churchhill is on the East End of the city. DH and I own an awesome rowhouse and we have a fabulous view of the city. We have a great coffee shop and bar in our neighborhood and we're within walking distance of some great restaurants. We are also surrounded by parks. And we're within walking distance of the medical school at VCU.
I've also lived in Short Pump (but only for a few months), near West End and The Fan. Church Hill is by far my fav
Happy to answer any questions if you want to hit me up!
Great thanks Ladies!!
DH still doesn't know about the CRNA program at VCU but he'd like to live near campus - so I suppose The Fan (?). I don't have a job yet but am working on that now and will probably have to commute.
We really like cool, little restaurants with organic or local food. We've been to Richmond once but will be touring more for his interview this winter.
