Toga Party Ideas Needed PLEASE

Every Labor day weekend, I throw a toga party.  I require everyone to dress up, have a costume contest and we even play "Olympic Games"

I am SO not feelin' it this year so I am hoping if I get everything planned, I will be more excited about it.

My Olympic Games are typically:

- "Chariot Races" = people wheelbarrow races (hysterical)

- "Trojan Tug of War" = self explanatory, it's tug of war

- "Shoutput" = take a jello shot, spin around in a circle, counterclockwise 3 times and overhand throw a beanbag into the board.

I want to add one or two more games, any suggestions?  I don't want anything with grape stomping because of the mess.

Prize suggestions are welcome as well!

I need menu help. For any other party, I typically grill but with me hosting the Olympic Games, I don't have time for that.  I like to have food items that can stay in the crock pot, on Sterno burners or on ice.

Last year my menu was something like this:

- italian beef sandwiches

- italian sausage in a pasta sauce with green peppers

- mostacolli

- meatballs in a pasta sauce

- veggie platter

- fruit platter

And some things I can't really remember.  I usually have 20-30 people attend throughout the day but we eat a couple times (since the party goes from about 4pm - 2am).  I don't/won't cater, so I will be making almost everything.

Any cheap (possibly DIY) centerpiece and other decor ideas?  I don't really decorate too much besides throwing some ivy around my serving table and having a backdrop for pictures.

TIA!

ETA: Last year's Italian menu has nothing to do with the theme.  I need menu items to keep in the crockpot and most of us are Italian so I knew it would be a crowd pleaser.

Re: Toga Party Ideas Needed PLEASE

  • This sounds like a really fun idea.

For food, what if you make a tray of mousaka or pastizio (sp)?

Or make up some grape leaves along with tzatzki?

Or have all the fixings to make chicken gyros?

Make up a big greek salad and a tray of baklava

For games, this is tough...can you do a three legged race for a track and field type event?  Maybe you can call it the Orthos race, Orthos being a two headed dog in Greek mythology.

If you wanted to have another drinking game maybe you could do some version of flip cup, like Ambrosia Flip Cup. (I don't know...kind of a stretch).

For prizes, I think it would be funny to give trophies.

For decorations, hmm.. what if you used white sheets/tableclothes to make really drape on the tables and then put ivy and grapes as a "runner" so to speak.

I don't know if this helps any.  Have fun.

  • I love pp suggestions for greek food!

What about grilling up some chicken souvlaki and gyro meat in advance and just having it out in a warmer (or even served cold) with hummus, tatziki sauce, veggies and pita?

You could do a huge greek salad as well.  People could eat the veggies and hummus as an appetizer too.  Maybe add an orzo pasta salad or a cous cous salad as well.  I think having grapes, crackers, and a cheese platter for apps would be good.  Then just a couple of desert options and you're done.

What about a take on ping pong for a game and making it more like beer pong?  Or you could have "gymnastics" and have people drink and do cartwheels and forward rolls or a handstand contest.  I love that kind of thing (but I was a former gymnast... haha).  Sounds like a great party!

  • Great suggestions ladies!  Thanks Smile
