I have an interview for a job in Columbia (bit of a shock since we were looking at settling in Greenville), so we are researching the area just in case the job comes through.
We want to buy in a neighborhood around downtown; I've looked at houses (online) in Elmwood, College Place, and College View. Does anyone live in these areas or have any comments?
Any suggestions for neighborhoods? We would like a house that was built before 1950 (hence my screen name...)
TIA! :-)
Re: Columbia Nesties?
Well Elmwood over the recent years has cleaned up a lot and the old homes are being restored however the crime rate and proximatity to the homeless shelters would make me reconsider.
I don't know college place or college view, I am assuming those are the new condos downtown on campus. I saw some of those condos going for 250k to 300k. Way overpriced in my opinion.
Check out Shandon, old houses and the neighborhood is beautiful but I warn you, I saw a two bedroom bunglow about 1000sq ft go for $400k. You might be able to get a deal with the economy in the crapper right now. Check out Forest Acres as well but stay away from the Beltline side or the Garner's Ferry side the area. You have to be central or you are going to hit bad areas of town.
Honestly most people live in NE or in the St Andrews/Irmo area. The commute isn't bad. Depending on your price range there is also Sandhills. It's a shopping area with condos above the stores. Really pretty and clean. Lots of housing developments going up in the NE area. A friend of mine got a 5 br 4 bath house for $165k. The neighborhood is great.
St Andrews and Irmo are going to have older homes. There is one down the street from me 3br 1/5 bt with huge lot and garage for $102k. Neighborhood is so quiet and the Columbiana mall is on the other side of the 'hood. You would never know it though. House were built between 1950 and 1965.
I like the charm of Rosewood but most of the area needs desparate clean up and rennovations. The crime can be very high in that area.
Thanks girls!
College View/College Place is right around Columbia College. It looked like it was a little hit and miss, but that I generally doesn't bother me. We would love to live in Shandon, but it will probably be out of our budget. I remember reading some information about Cottontown, so I will check that out.
Hi,
What side of town is the job on? I'd think with gas prices, that should be considered. I prefer the downtown area. IMO- the Northeast side of town is over-rated. They call it the Sandhills area. It has really grown and many people have moved to that area. I will say that the school districts are great. So, if you have children in gradeschool or higher- that should be considered.Traffic conjestion is horrible, so if you work downtown and live in the NE- be prepared.
Irmo- is very congested, too. My suggestions are downtown. Yes, the Elmwood/Earlewood areas are pricey. You're simply paying for convenience. The area is very historic. I love the old trees and the overall look of the homes as far as landscape design. The "sandhills" area- is simply that, sand- there are many cookie cutter type homes and little to no trees. (Many water restrictions, too- a no/no for DH and I since we enjoy gardening and maintaining a lush yard). I live approx.5 minutes from downtown, so I have the convenience of getting to downtown quickly- however the Irmo area and Lexington are very close.
If money is of no concern, my favorite area is the Shandon/Rosewood neighborhood. Also, consider Forest Acres- it's gorgeous.
oldhouse-
I don't normally do this, but I can set you up on MLS to receive e-mails of the newest listings in the Elmwood and Shandon areas...or any other area you are looking for.
I know on the nest we aren't supposed to offer services but I could help you out if you need it. GL on your search!?
