Cleaning Up Backyard--Need Advice

 Hi, all.

My DH and I are finally getting into cleaning up our backyard--cutting down small trees, raking old leaves, etc. It appears that the previous owners didn't fancy raking up leaves. There are multiple places where the leaves have composted and there are MULTIPLE layers of leaves and no grass. I've tried raking the leaves up. However, the rake isn't working. I'm thinking of using a mower to go over the leaves to break up the layers. But, am not sure if that will help. Does anyone have any advice on what to do? I'm hoping the mower will  mulch the leaves and we can rake up the remnants. I can't believe the owners did this to the lawn!!

  • Mulching it should work.  Then you can use that as mulch around any plants, it has lots of nutrients.

I agree.  Leaf mold (aka chopped up leaves that are decomposing) is one of the best sources of nutrients for your plants.  Around here people actually pay big bucks for it.

As FoxinFiji said- composed leaves are pure gold. I'd be thankful that the previous owners were smart enough to remove the lawn and restore the natural conditions. It saves SO much time and work when beginning new landscape projects- and so much MONEY.
