How are you and your family holding up? Any new news on your grandfather?

Re: **EDK**

  • Aww thanks for thinking of me.

It has been a rough week and a half. My Mom had a few of her colleagues take a look at his scans/results and everyone (incuding the two neurologists) is pretty positive that it is a "fast-moving" form of Alzheimer's. He does still have fluid on the brain and his brain is shrinking (atrophy). My family has decided not to go for a third opinion until after his genetic testing results have come back in a few weeks.

He was put on Alzheimer's meds and according to my parents they have made a difference. Right now they're just trying to get a grasp on things, hopefully get an idea of how quickly he will decline and get my grandmother into a support group (she's not taking it well). My parents met with a builder a few days ago to start renovations to make the "in-law" apartment attached to their house handicapped accessible as his gait and balance are really off. It's been kind of rough on everyone and on top of it my older siter and her husband separated last week, they have two little kids.

My grandfather is actually doing really well, he is out of it enough to not really understand what is going on. My Mom says he is really happy and kind of acting like a kid. He offered to "babysit" my teenage brothers last weekend which consisted of sitting on the couch with a bowl of popcorn in his pajamas, his feet on the coffee table and watching a movie; my Mom said it was hysterical to see.

I'm hanging in there, wishing I could go home to help. I get to see them all in Toronto for Canadian Thanksgiving in October, they'll be here for one of DH's games and I'm flying out for it. So that will be nice!

  • I'm glad you're hanging in there. That's sad about your sister and her husband. I hope they are able to work out what is best for them easily.

I'm thankful that your grandfather is doing well with it all, I'm sure that helps your family out in the long run. October isn't far away! I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers!
