Ideas for coping while miserable?

I've made great progress in keeping my work stress, anger and frustrations at work and out of my home, which I'm pretty proud of myself for.  What I can't seem to do is control the anger, stress and frustrations at work.  Every time I turn around, someone needs something from me.  I can't eat my lunch without someone talking to me, yadda, yadda, yadda...

I spend the majority of my day staring at my cell phone, hoping SOMEONE from one of the many jobs I applied to will call me for an interview.

Any advice?  I'm feeling rather desperate and trapped.

Re: Ideas for coping while miserable?

  • Can you leave for lunch? Even if it is to just eat out in your car in the parking lot? I learned that for me, if I didn't get that little bit of a break away from people, the afternoon did not go well.

I'm not really sure I have any practical advice other than that.... My income is simply supplemental, so DH always asks me to leave a job if it interferes with my mental well being to that extent.

  • Ditto StarJay, leave for lunch or at least take a quiet walk by yourself around the outside of the building.  If you really can't leave, if someone comes to talk to you, try saying "I'm sorry I'm taking my lunch right now.  You can come talk to me in XX minutes."

When it's not lunch time, try some hot (non-caffinated) tea. I had a coworker who used to get stressed a lot at work and when she really couldn't take it anymore, she would make herself a cup of tea and it seemed to help.

Other than that I have no ideas.  I've never had a job where I've been that stressed.

  • Thanks, ladies.

I do definitely need to make an effort to leave at some point (or points?) during the day.  Unfortunately, the nature of my job leaves me on call 24/7, so they often find me...or when I come back, everyone is freaking out Huh? A big part of the problem is the people I work with, obviously.  Everything is an "emergency". One of my favorite work lines is, "if there's an emergency, please call 911 - NOT ME."

Tea sounds delightful! I should try taking a tea break every day.

I've done little things like change my desktop background to a happier picture (sounds dumb, but I think that made a difference!).  And I have to keep telling myself that all this experience will pay off later...but I guess I just wish I knew when "later" was, kwim?

Either way, sorry I keep complaining about it...I hate being a broken record, but I'm so frustrated!  Ugh.  At least I have a job in this economy!
