so I'm reviewing resumes . . .

and think it is so weird that people list their family status (as in spouse's and children's names and ages) and hobbies. Seriously, isn't that a big no no?

Re: so I'm reviewing resumes . . .

  • that is def a big NO NO  it's not professional and you know an emploer would try to discriminate on the amt of children you have though they are not supposed to.

  • I try to ignore that part and skip over it, but seriously - it's so weird!
  • I've never heard of listing family status before!  That's crazy (IMO).

I have been seeing a lot of people post hobbies on their resumes though.  It surprised me at first, but it seems like its somewhat common.  Is that a growing trend?

  • I think if it's related, it makes sense. But if it has nothing whatsoever to do with the job it just seems like a waste of time. (mine!)
  • Is this person older (from what you can gather).  And, I'm taking this is for your work and maybe having a religious affliate, people make more likely to list family and marital status....to show they are a nice Christian family??  Just a thought.

Is this a female or male or do you find both genders do that.

You know, the ages and genders were all over the place, but many of them are seminary graduates. I'm thinking that maybe in seminary they were told to include that sort of thing, which would make sense for a pastoral position where your whole life is pretty much up for review (which is why I could never be a pastor or a pastor's wife!). This position is new and had a lot of pastors apply for it, which is different than a strict administrative or fundraising ones that I've hired for before.

  • In the US, it is a major no, but overseas it is pretty common and expected.  Wonder if you have a lot of foreign applicants.

  • When I first learned how to write a resume it was expected to have hobbies, ect. on it. Then a few years later it was a big no-no. Now I just try to keep my resume to one page so that means no room for extras like that.
