Prob a really dumb question but...

I have a wine decanter I inherited from my mother-in-law. (Was her great grandmother's.)

It has a relatively small opening at the top, and I'm wondering how you're supposed to get the wine from the bottle into it?!  Am I supposed to use a funnel?  That seems odd for some reason, but maybe it's that simple?

Re: Prob a really dumb question but...

  • You can't just pour it in carefully from the bottle?  I have a decanter, but I never use it...it's more for decoration that sits with our wine.
  • If it's too small to pour directly in, just use a funnel.  If you're using a decanter, you're serving it from that.  No one cares how the wine got in there.

And this has nothing to do with your question but it occurred to me that if the opening is so small you may want to get a bottle brush or decanter cleaning beads to clean it out.

  • I would get an aerating funnel for your wine.  It sprays the wine out the bottom of the funnel (many have a sediment filter as well) and lets it breathe better than just opening the bottle and letting it sit.  Also, a mixture of warm water, white vinegar, and long grain white rice works better than decanter cleaning beads to clean it.
