Breastfeeding Pumping Questions
Hi all,
I am back to work and am pumping at work. For those who pumped at work..
1) How many times in the day did you pump?
2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time?
3) How long (months) did you keep it up?
I am on day 2 of being back and am really struggling given my schedule. I feel like all I am doing is preparing to pump, pumping or cleaning up after pumping, I am not sure when the real work will actually happen!!
TIA!
Sarah
Re: Breastfeeding Pumping Questions
Try the national working mom's board - you will probably get quite a bit more answers
For me:
1) 3 at work, 3 outside of work (in addition to nursing DD)
2) I pumped a minute or two past when I was dry - usually about 15-20 minutes
3) I pumped at work until DD was 12 months, nursed a bit past that
Pumping is HARD work, and if it is something that is important to you, you already have to get in the commitment mindset. Once you find a routine, it will go much easier.
Are you able to work while you pump? I was able to have a computer in the room I pumped in (at least when I was in my office and not at client's) so I didn't loose out on too much efficiency.
Also, consider buying multiple pump parts. I just used a fresh set of parts every time I pumped at work and washed them at night - saved me time washing during the day.
Hang in there - you will figure out a routine that works for you, and it will get MUCH easier!
A Little Bird and a Monkey Butt
It can sometimes be really tough and I hated it alot of times but i know it was so good for my DS and it saved us a ton of money.
Keep it up though if you can....it will get easier once you get into a routine.
Good luck!
1) How many times in the day did you pump? 3, I pump right when I get up in the morning and then twice at work. I have thought about adding one more session during the day, but at this point I am pumping a little more than what she is eating while she's at daycare.
2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time? 5-10 minutes
3) How long (months) did you keep it up? This is my 4th week back, and I hope to make it a year. So far it's going fine, but like I said above, I think I may have to add at least one more pumping sessions if Carly starts needing to eat more while she's at day care.
I am on day 2 of being back and am really struggling given my schedule. I feel like all I am doing is preparing to pump, pumping or cleaning up after pumping, I am not sure when the real work will actually happen!! It is not fun pumping at work, but I try to look at it as a little break from my job. What are you doing to clean up? I just rinse my materials out and set them out to dry, but I have heard that you don't even need to do that. Some people just throw them in a bag and into the fridge, and it's just fine.

My situation is a little different. I never nursed and have exclusively pumped since dd was born. I used to pump more often when she was little- every 2-3 hours initially to build up my supply.
Here's my current schedule:
1) How many times in the day did you pump? I pump 3 times per day and am able to get what she needs for the day.
2) How long (minutes) did you pump for each time? I always pump for at least 20 minutes. I pump until I am dry - usually about 20-25 minutes.
3) How long (months) did you keep it up? 6 months and still going strong. I have about 1300 oz. frozen in our deep freeze but it will probably only feed her for 2 months so I'm going to try and keep pumping for another 2-3 months so she can get bm until she's one year old.
I HIGHLY recommend getting a pumping bra. If I didn't have it I definitely would have quit a long time ago. I have the Simple Wishes pumping bra at Target. It's in the bottle aisle next to the pumping supplies.
Good luck!

I just use my regular bra, and it works just great! I bought one of those pumping bras, but I think I am going to bring it back.
