Poison ivy - dead leaves and living

Hi everyone, hopefully someone has some advice or can point me in a direction.

I recently moved and found a huge patch of poison ivy growing up a tree in the back of my property. We had a guy come out and kill it all but then his business closed down and we had a bunch of dead poison ivy on our hands.  Today a friend came over to get rid of it. That's the good part.

Some of the dead leaves fell in my veggie garden. Is everything scrapped or am I over-reacting?

There are also many of the leaves scattered around the back portion of the yard (also dead). I know the oil stays on the dead leaves, so do I need to "wash" the grass or do something to keep the oil from spreading to the grass and onto us everytime we go back there?

Thanks in advanced for any help!

  • I think you are overreacting.  Just rake up and dispose of the leaves, but don't burn them.
  • Wear long sleeves, long plants and gloves.  Gather up everything and put it in a garbage bag and dispose of it.  (Like pp said - do NOT burn it.)  When you are finished, immediately wash your clothes and take a shower.  If you are really worried, they make a special soap that is supposed to break down the oil, but if you have worn appropriate clothing you shouldn't need it.  If you have a severe allergy, ask someone else to do it.

One note though - the leaves can be dead but the vines can still thrive.  So if you don't want it to come back, make sure that you have pulled up all of the vines as well.
