Got suckered

Crap!

I feel like a complete idiot, but I signed a price protection agreement from a door to door energy person.  You know, the kind they do stories about on CBC warning you not to sign anything.  Yeah, that was me - the sucker.

Anyway, I need advice on what to do.  I emailed my cancellation and today I am going to send a registered letter as well, because I know about the 10 day cooling off period.  Anything else I can do to assure that this thing is cancelled?

Re: Got suckered

  • Eek, I hadn't heard about CBC covering it. What did they say and why?

We've had them come a couple times, but we stayed away from them because they seemed so shady. We caught one in a number of outright lies.

  • A while back CBC had a story about the door-to-door people, and the tactics they use to get people to sign on.  It amounted to harassment, insults, bullying, etc. they would stop at nothing to get your signature.  You would end up paying more money by locking in with them, and they don't really make it clear that that is what the agreement is for.  If you look up Summitt Energy scam, there is a lot of info.

Luckily I got out of it by calling and canceling today, but a lot of people get trapped for five years.  I also sent a letter and an email, just in case. Phew!  Lesson learned!

  • I should point out that it isn't a complete scam...they do offer a legitimate service.  It's not like they ask you for money up front and then disappear with it.  It's more the way they go about getting customers that is shady.  They like to give you the impression that they are from your gas or electric provider, and what they offer isn't really a deal unless prices skyrocket.

  • I had the exact same thing happen to me last year. We had just moved into our home and I was clueless.

I e-mailed a scathing letter to the company and did receive a response from them confirming my cancellation. If you don't receive a response within a certain time frame I would call the company to confirm the cancellation.

  • I called and got a confirmation number for the cancellation, so everything is good!

Congratulations on your baby on the way!  I am happy to see that things have worked out for you.

  • They suckered my Oma (Grandma) who has alzheimers too. She can't even legally sign a contract, and my mom had to find out about it when she received an outrageous bill from them, and at first they refused to cancel it!

Finally they cancelled it, which really it should never have existed because she is not mentally competent to sign a contract, which makes the contract void by law.
